I got infected?
« on: March 07, 2009, 09:20:33 AM »
While I was browsing in internet a pop up appeared indicating that came from "virus doctor internet explorer". In mediatelly started a scan for virus by itself.
Because it was an invasive intrusion without giving me an option to deny it, I stopped the browsing using  the windows task manager. After investigating from another PC, I realized  that I was right: was a scam. I forgot to tell that right away I start a complete scan with my Avast 4.8...antivirus,witch still running now.
My question is: My action was good enough to impede Virus doctor to install?.
I'll appreciate any advise about this. (Sorry: i am not good at English.

This thing should have an uninstaller. Check Add-Remove Programs in Windows.
I can't say if it's going to be effective. I've encountered some that can be easily uninstalled. Some remain even when you uninstall them.
And i'f you're still using Internet Explorer, i suggest you start using something else, like Opera, Firefox, Google Chrome or Apple Safari.

Here is some more info. I suggest you gather all the files, pack them in ZIP archive (encrypt with password "infected") and send them to virus@avast.com. After that you can delete them by hand. By doing so, you'll remove the Virus Doctor files and allow avast! team to add detection for this fake antivirus, preventing it from installing to your system ever again.

Virus Doctor is a rogue antivirus software.

I suggest removing it with MBAM.

CARLIN,
My bet is if you terminated the browser without downloading a exe file,
or clicking on the exe file, you are fine.
I have had these fake java scans pop up,and followed the same plan of action
you did,with no infection.
Problem is,No one can say for sure.
So,the suggestions to run something like Malwarebytes and submit a Hi-Jack This
log are good.
Firefox with no scripts will stop these fake scans.
I have read that recent legal action, where the developers of these are Rogue apps are being targeted, may reduse their number.
If so,it has not kicked in yet.

-= Hijack This scans for registry areas, etc for infections.. It could only detect infections that are already in your computer.. Meaning, its more utilizable on an infected computer since it has no resident scanner or heuristics..

Take some time and follow this plan as suggested from the previous posters
Full scan with SAS and MBAM
Download DR WEB CureIt free scanner and do a full scan
then you are about to know if you are infected or not
Hope not :-[
