Check your Java version - 16 holes patched....
« on: March 25, 2009, 07:39:22 PM »
Hi malware fighters,

Users of Java should check their version against the latest here:
http://java.com/en/download/installed.jsp

Everything OK? Right, so,

While you're at it, just go to http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/online/ and check for all vulnerabilities...

Verifying Java Version
Congratulations!
You have the recommended Java installed (Version 6 Update 13).
The Secunia scan was fine also :)

Hi Dan,

It is good that you and little old me posted it here on two occasions, because there are whole armies of non-computer-savvy users that forget to update Java to the most recent and fully patched version.
It is fortunate that Java with the new installer also removes the oldies (vulnerable versions and exploits always seeks out those that are vulnerable!), so they have no excuse now when we find older versions of Java on their boxes, and I have Secunia PSI version 1.0.0.4. here...

I have been trying every way I know to d/l update 12 and now 13 and keep getting an error message 1606.  I don't know what else to do to get the update.  I even tried to uninstall the version I have 6 update 11 and still get the same error message.

How are you trying to download it ?
Download manager, browser download, are you saving it to the hard disk to run it off-line ?

Did you try this location, http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp, direct from Sun ?
That is where I downloaded it yesterday.

You should remove old versions as they can be exploited, you should only have the latest version installed.

Java is trying to slide in the Yahoo toolbar now.
watch for the check box (checked "yes" by default)

David, that is the link I use and I d/l the offline version and save it to desktop.  I have tried IE and FF with their d/l manager and also the extension DownThemAll in FF.  I have also tried disabling firewall and antivirus.  Nothing I have tried works.  Still get error message.
