avast!: The AAVM subsystem detected a RPC error.

Way ahead of you!
Quote
Can you try to repair your installation?
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove. Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair).

If this does not help, can you uninstall / boot / install / boot again?

Do you have any other antivirus installed in your computer?
Did you have in the past? Which one?
Do you use a firewall? Which one?

Also, take a look into Administrative Tools > Services
and see how the four avast services are set to start (automatically or manual).

No, repairing doesn't do ANYTHING.

Yes, I can, and did. Multiple times. To no avail.

Yes, McAfee.

No.

Yes, the basic Windows Firewall.

All four are on automatically start,...

Help appreciated, don't feel safe with just McAfee running, rofl.

Btw. I run the 4.8 Home edition of Avast!.

The problem is that you cannot run two AV's on one computer. Even if one is installed and not active, it will still very likely interfere with the other.
-If you don't have the full installer file for Avast, (36.99Mb) get it Here (just below the words "Free Registration") and save it to your desktop.
-Get the McAfee removal tool Here (one of the four download buttons below the animated "downloads" chevron.
-Get the Avast uninstall utility and save it to your desktop.
-Disconnect from the internet.
-Uninstall McAfee via the control panel. Reboot.
-Run the McAfee removal tool. Reboot.
Avast may be OK at this point. If so, all is well. (You may need to try a repair again.)
If not,
-Uninstall Avast via the control panel.
-Run the Avast uninstall utility. Reboot.
-Install Avast from the full installer file.
-Reconnect. Get updates.

Should be all good to go.

It's weird though; this problem only started yesterday, and I've been using this combo for 2 months. Can anyone elaborate on how this can happen after such a period of time?

Strangely, it happened at the same time my Windows Installer service got bugged/corrupted.

Edit:
Haven't tried the fix yet, btw, just trying to get some more info.

You were simply lucky.
Generally about any real-time scanner. The two will always fight with each other, sooner or later...

Sorry, Tarq57, the fix didn't work,... Perhaps because, like I said in my last post, my Windows Installer service is bugged, so I can't uninstall anything,... Can anyone help me with that, maybe?

Well, you could try downloading the current Windows installer from Microsoft, or from the Software patch. I have no experience installing this app., but I'd probably give it a shot, if it was me.
I installed this version when it was released some time ago via Ms updates.

Whoops, forgot to mention that I'm using Vista. The first file you gave me is XP only.

And the second one requires Window Installer to already work,... I know, I've tried it =).

The Ms System requirements on that page indicate it should be OK for Vista, but Here is the link to the software patch Vista version.

(Dead curious to know if this will work. Hope you don't mind being a test case. ;D Caveat Emptor!)
