what AV did you have before installing avast! ?
have you removed it ?
did you run a removal tool to clear any leftovers ?

Try avast repair and reboot
For a repair of avast. Windows, Add Remove programs, select 'avast! Anti-Virus,' click the Change/Remove button from the pop-up window, scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

McAfee has an uninstall tool that you could run to ensure any possible remnants are removed. Check out this page for removal tool and instructions, http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS100507

After running that, reboot and see if that allows avast to start. If it doesn't try the repair again, if that doesn't work you will have to reinstall avast.
