The previous install use to display what was being scan real time in a line just above the systray. This version does not do that or I don't have something config'd correctly. Anyone remeber this?
Don't have to remember - I am an avast! newbie, but it is right there.
I am assuming you mean when you scan emails?
If so, right-click your blue-ball icon in the notification area (aka systray), then select "On-Access Protection Control".
Select "Internet Mail" and then the "Advanced Tab".
Check the "Show detailed info on performed action" box.
And there you go. (I am referring to avast! 4 Home Edition.)

On the Content list expand the following branch and select the last on it:
Resident Protection > Internet Mail Provider Settings > "Advanced" Page
