Your right if your using Linux, you don't need windows updates.

Artras
To use the update function requires IE.

Sorry, but my operating system is updated at the source. Not from a third party.

But, that's only my opinion. :)

For those who don't want to download all the updates each time after a fresh installation of windows. Updates/patches can be downloaded here. You can put them on a cd and use that to patch a system.

There is also a FREE(!) cd with many updates/patches including sp1. You can order it here. There are no costs for this at all. Everything is paid by MS including the shipping costs.

I meant if you were using Win98 and had IE removed.

3rd party ?!?! did you actually read the URL ?? it's MicroSoft ... only instead of automagically updating, you download the patches as executables and run them.

Hi Goner,
I appologize, I did misread the link.  :(

Then you would not be able to use the Windows Update function and have to do what Goner does.

Personally, I still pref. the update site then I'm sure I see all the updates that my system is lacking.

Artras, your link to windows update give the version 4. Microsoft is on version 5 of windows update.

It's my understanding (and of course maybe I've misunderstood) that ver. 5 is maybe still sort-of-beta, and definitely still has problems.

And in any event, if you go to the ver. 4 site, the very first thing you get is "Checking for latest version of updater", and so far that hasn't said a word to me about ver. 5 or done anything except run like it always has.

Both links are working. But there is a difference. The first one let you just download the updates/patches, the second one is automaticly installing them. That is the difference between windows update and the windows update catalog.

Yea, but my point was if you don't have IE or Outlook installed why would you need to patch their security holes?

Bob, aren't most MS patches IE / OE related? If both programs are not on your computer... :)

They might well be but a number of them are OS patches.

You would be surprised what uses IE, windows explorer for a start, OE for the preview of emails (which is why OE is so vulnerable unless IE is kept up to date) and I think the help files you open and the help and support interface.

In theory, it should work. Naturally without the features that make direct use of IE (help files, iNews etc).

The core (engine, on-access scanner, Simple UI) is IE-free.

But of course, the best would be to try it out... ;)
