buffer overload
« on: September 09, 2004, 12:22:37 AM »
When I have more then 40 incoming e-mails (outlook express).  I get an error message for AVAST buffer overload and it shuts down the e-mail sever.  Can anyone help me.

1. Are you sure are you using avast! Server Edition?
2. You mean Buffer Overflow, right? (not Overload  :))
3. Can you replicate the problem, or it just happened once and you don't know how to simulate it again...?

Thanks

Sorry, yes it says overflow.  It has happened several times.  I am using the avast 4.1 free software.  Am I in the wrong area?

Is the overflow in process ashMaiSv.exe ?
Do you think that it is caused by some particular mail ?
Did you have to turn off the protection or how did you work around it ?

It does not appear to be mail related.  It only happens when there is a lot of mail.  I do not want to shut down the virus protection because it has stopped several already.  I work around it by going to the web mailroom and deleting all the spam.  After reducing the number of e-mail it will stop giving me the message Buffer OVERRUN, and runs just find untill I let the e-mail load up again.

Could it be that not the number of mails but their total size is causing this?

Donn, I know it won't be the final solution but it will let your system working, but why don't you use a spam killer (like MailWasher or the freeware Spamihilator) to delete the spam first and then scan only the good messages?  ::)

It will save time, increase virus security and your happiness  ;D

I think that message count or total size cannot be the reason, because each mail is discarded after having been processed. Could you please forward me the spams that you delete from server when you encounter the overrun (by mail via the web interface). You can see which mail was retrieved last in Outlook Express task window.

I meant to send it before deleting.
