Welcome to this board,

Yes, Avast and Norton do not work together. If you do a search on this board you will find threads explaining on how to remove Norton completely.

And your typing is just fine ;)

The uninstall utillity from Symantec (Norton) helped me in the past.
It works for Norton version 2003 and back.
ftp://ftp.symantec.com/misc/consumer/Rnav2003.exe

Just a suggestion, take some time to get familiar with Avast's settings and what they do. The help can explain a lot and so can this board. ;)

No, avast! does not even work with Norton antivirus installed.
Probably you do not get the 'a' icon in the system tray and if you get, the 'a' icon must have a red cross in it. It means: avast! is not working.
You must uninstall Norton Antivirus 2002 by Control Panel and after that, use a specific tool of Symantec to remove traces of NAV from Windows Registry.

You don't have to uninstall Norton Utilities... I use them and avast! does not 'detect' or 'conflict' with them  ;)
