If you try to "ping" the server, you can see if it's really down, and where the connection is corrupted.

Maybe its  a problem on your site of the line and not the server being down, could be...

How do you connect to the Internet? Do you use a proxy server? If so it must be set up correctly in avast...

I use a direct connection,no proxy settings or anything else...I've gotten this message each time I tried.
One time there was a different number of server that was "said" to be down.Normally it's always the same server number.

Are you behind a firewall? Which one?
Do you try what Waldo said? Can you ping the servers?

No I'm not behind a firewall

When I "ping" the servers I get the message,"error resolving host address"

This is taken from the setup.def located in the setup folder:

[servers]
count=4

[server0]
name=Main ASW server
url=http://www.asw.cz/iavs4pro
stats=http://www2.asw.cz/cgi-bin/iavs4_stats.cgi

[server1]
name=Main AVAST server
url=http://www.avast.com/iavs4pro
stats=http://www2.asw.cz/cgi-bin/iavs4_stats.cgi

[server2]
name=Secondary AVAST server
url=http://www.iavs.net/iavs4pro
stats=http://www2.asw.cz/cgi-bin/iavs4_stats.cgi

[server3]
name=Secondary ASW server
url=http://www.iavs.cz/iavs4pro
stats=http://www2.asw.cz/cgi-bin/iavs4_stats.cgi

Finally,this is taken from the setup log which shows a few seconds after I try to do an update and when it says server down:

server definition(s): 4. From file: 4. Old overwritten: 0.
Current server(1): http://www.avast.com/iavs4pro
ERROR:insLoadPackage returned:0x20000004
ERROR:Server www.iavs.net (207.44.156.15:80) is down.

And I've gotten the same message for another server too,which is 62.168.45.69:80

Thanks  :)
