POP3 Timeout while waiting for user
« on: November 19, 2004, 01:56:59 AM »
Hi!

I don't know if there's a way of working this out, but I just haven't
found some way to set avast! (free) to automatically delete infected
attached files on e-mail messages.

My POP3 server will disconnect an idle client after 10 seconds, and
if I take too long reading the avast! dialog box, I have to start my
e-mail fetching all over...

My suggestion is that avast! could send "NOOP" messages do the
POP3 server in order to avoid this disconnections.

Have a look at the mail scanning setting in the on-access control panel for the mail scanner. It is under the advanched tab, called silent mode.

Outlook/Exchange if you use Outlook or Exchange
Internet mail for Outlook Express (and others)

Ohh.. I found it. But still, there are several options on the dialog that appears
when I get virus. The silent option only offers YES or NO (what about Delete?).

Nevertheless, I guess that avast! (my wish to the wishlist!) could still send
NOOPs while waiting for user input in non-silent mode.

Delete (and more options) are only in Avast Pro.

Silent with an answer of No, puts the virus into the chest where it's safe but could be restored should the alarm be a false positive.
I have the Pro version and I still choose this option because it's the option that keeps you safe and does the least harm.
I clean out the chest about 1 week after a virus has been detected. That's usually enough time to make sure the file isn't needed and wasn't a false positive. Even though false positives are rare, they do happen.
Hope that helps.

The answer Yes will delete the file...

The answer Yes in silent mode keeps the virus in the message, as far as I know...

Why didn't you correct me before? I posted a lot in the same way: no for send to chest and yes for delete and you (and all others) did not say a word...  :-\  :'(
