system locks on updates
« on: June 23, 2012, 05:35:32 PM »
Is anyone else having issues with v7.1426 locking system on updates? 2 days in a row now when I bring my pc out of hibernation avast! tries to update, as customary, does not (no error messages) and no other programs can load/function. I end up having to do a hard reboot. Upon restart, it completes the update and gives the customary popup to that effect. I am a long time avast user and never had this happen before. I have since changed my settings to have avast! services load last. We'll see what, if any effect, that has going forward. I never thought I would this concerning avast, but I have to tell you V7 is getting on my last nerve.

AMD Athlon 3000+ 2.17Ghz, 1.50Gb ram, xp sp3, avast! 7.0.1426 free, Privatefirewall 7, MBam free, SaS free. Winpatrol.

Hey I suggest you do a clean installation from scratch and see if that could help.

download  the latest version of avast.

download the uninstall tool to uninstall avast.

download cclener.

After you have download the three programs begin with running the uninstall tool. reboot your system.

install and run the registry cleaner in cclener, to clean any left files of avast.

install the new avast you downloaded.

registry the program.

good luck

Thanks for your response, mikaelrask. Frankly, if I have to do an uninstall and reinstall, I will likely install another AV.

Out of curiosity, did this problem start when you changed your settings of Avast to load last?  If so, why did you do that and have you tried changing it back to see if the problem goes away?  If not, then I suggest the following:

If you still have problems, do an Avast Repair:
- Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > Avast Antivirus.
- Scroll down and choose Repair function in the pop-up window.
- Reboot.

If the Repair fails, try cleaning up your machine with CCleaner Slim version with no toolbars: http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/builds - scroll down page.  Then defrag your machine with something like Puran or Defraggler - both available at filehippo.com, then reboot your machine.

If these suggestions do not work, since you have used Avast for a while, most likely you have several versions of Avast in your machine that need to be cleaned out.  The only way to do this is with the Avast Uninstaller Tool and do a clean install of the current version.  It really goes quicker than it sounds.  But before you get to that point, let us know how the above goes first.  :)

Thanks for your response, safesurf. In answer to your question, I change the load services last feature today only after the system locked up again trying to update. This problem only occurs when avast attempts to update after coming out of hibernation at the beginning of my day. The rest of the day it updates without issue. I already ran the repair function after my initial post here. So later on this morning after I wake the system we'll see what it does. One other thing I should mention, is that I downloaded a program Spotflux on Thursday, which encrypts my IP address via the modem. This update problem started on Friday, and then again today. Spotflux was setup to start with windows. I changed that today as well, and took it out of my startup items. So when I resume windows later today, if there is no problem it maybe Spotflux that is behind it. Will update you later on today. Thanx.

Update: Brought pc out of hibernation this morning without issue. Either the problem was solved by running the avast! repair function, or the issue is related to Spotflux activity on startup. I suspect the latter. I will add spotflux back into my startup items, and if the problem manifests I'll have a definitive answer. Thanks again to everyone that responded.

You're doing the correct thing in trying to narrow it down to what is causing the problem.  Keep us posted.  Thank you...and good job.  ;)
