Following a recent round of Windows 7 updates, my PC now freezes at the welcome screen. Using MSconfig to selectively disable service/startup items I narrowed it down to Avast. With Avast disabled the PC boots to desktop without any trouble. Re-enabling re-introduces the freezup. What should I do now?

1. Download avast! Free Antivirus: http://files.avast.com/test5beta/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe
2. Follow instructions: http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (Run this tool for all prior installed avast! versions..!!)
3. Reinstall avast! with the downloaded installer from point 1.
4. Reboot.

What firewall are you using?  I've seen firewalls cause this problem unless you can put them into a "Learning Mode"or something like this while you are doing a Windows/MS Update.

In the meantime, follow the directions given to you by Asyn and let us know if this works and answer the firewall question.  Thank you.

OK, thanks - I now have 7.0.1443 installed and running OK at startup.

The Reliability Monitor in Windows is quite revealing:

Things started to go wrong for me on 14/06 when a bunch of updates installed on shutdown the previous day. Windows kept freezing on the welcome screen so in safe mode I restored the system to the point before the updates and then manually updated once Windows started properly. That seemed OK but then yesterday another bunch of Windows updates (ActiveX, Core, Aux) installed at start-up and the same freeze at the Welcome screen happened. This is when I used msconfig to do a selective start-up and isolated avast! as being the only application associated with the freeze.

Today's warning triangle is to do with me uninstalling Google Chrome which came as a surprise install along with avast.

From what I can see, the reliability plot correlates directly with the scale of Windows updates  ::)

SafeSurf - I only have the built-in Windows firewall. I've been using it without any issues with avast! for several months so my money is on one of the above updates.

This problem has reoccurred. After removing 7.0.1426 and installing 7.0.1443 the PC was fine for a couple of weeks but then for no apparent reason today, once again,  avast! is causing a hang at the welcome screen.

If I press the reset button and reboot into safe mode and disable both avast! and the avast! service using msconfig the PC will boot to the desktop where I can perform an avast! Fix from the control panel. avast! will then run happily on the desktop until then next boot. Only a full uninstall/reinstall got around this last time but it's hardly something anyone would want to do every couple of weeks.

Currently I'm running version 7.0.1456 which avast! says is the latest version. Since this started with version 7.0.1426 I can't say exactly many updates have happened. I haven't personally made any significant changes to my system over this period but there have been a number of Windows updates. While last time I got the impression the problem was triggered by a Windows update the night before, this time looking at the Windows problem history the last Windows update was four days ago so I doubt that has anything to do with it.

EDIT: Just noticed that I have two instances of avast! Antivirus appearing in System Configuration>Startup. I was wondering why it kept opting for Selective startup when I tried to check Normal startup. Another clean re-install I suppose. :(

Just noticed that I have two instances of avast! Antivirus appearing in System Configuration>Startup. I was wondering why it kept opting for Selective startup when I tried to check Normal startup. Another clean re-install I suppose.
Try an Avast Repair first:
Vista & Win7 Users:
-   Control Panel
-   Programs & Features
-   Uninstall a Program > Select Avast Antivirus
-   Click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair
-   Click Next and follow.
-   Reboot.

If this doesn't work, then do an uninstall/clean install:
1. Save a copy of Avast and save it to your HDD:
Version 7.0.1456:
Avast Free AV:   http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe
2. Download the Avast Uninstall Utility http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility and save it to your HDD or desktop.
3. Disconnect from the Internet at this time.
4. Go into Safe Mode (hit F8 repeatedly) and run the Avast Uninstall Tool. Uninstall ALL previous versions and products of Avast you had on this machine and reboot in between each uninstall
6. Reboot.
7. Install the newest version of Avast and reboot.
8. Get Internet access and register your copy or add the license key for Free, Pro, or AIS online.
    Free – http://www.avast.com/registration-free-antivirus.php
9. Update the Avast definitions.

Let us know if this works for you.

Yes, I know http://download.cnet.com/Avast-Free-Antivirus/3000-2239_4-10019223.html?part=dl-85737&subj=dl&tag=button.  My original post is from Avast.  This post is from CNET.

The user still needs to remove ALL previous versions and products first on uninstall.
