Latest Avast Free BSOD Help?
« on: June 29, 2012, 04:08:33 PM »
Did a search on my BSOD details and came up with only an eight year old post.

Updated my Avast a couple days ago and the computer started BSOD loop crashing on reboot. Wouldn't uninstall when I restored computer.
Downloaded the Avast removal tool and successfully removed the program in Safe Mode.
Used CC Cleaner to make sure I had a clean new install.
New install failed with a BSOD but this time the screen remained, so I copied a couple pertinent details.

Perhaps you all can point me a fix for this?

ASWSP.SYS  page_fault_in_nonpaged_area
address FFFFFADF87280551 base at FFFFFADF87278000
date stamp 4f56a5f3

Win XP-64
No other firewalls, Windows firewall disabled
No recent hardware driver updates
Recent software updates: Java and Adobe only

Suggestions? Or fixes?

Thanks!

Updated a couple of days ago, the latest avast version is 7.0.1451 http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=100247.0 and was only released yesterday, I guess you haven't got that version ?

If not I suggest that you download it or update via the avastUI, Maintenance, Updates, Program update.

Thank you for that link. I used it and downloaded 7.0.1451 directly.

But, same blue screen of death. The program reaches 100% installation (using Express Install) and flashes through a couple activations, such as Webshield and Mail. After 2 or 3 of those flashes, screen goes black and BSOD appears.

Same message, ASWSP.SYS,  page_fault_in_nonpaged_area

Used the removal tool in Safe and turned on Windows Firewall until we try something else. I guess cruddy Windows Firewall is better than nothing.

Any other suggestions?  ;)

Upgrade was unsuccessful, aswsp.sys driver is updated during next reboot.
Uninstall avast in safe mode, reboot and install 7.0.1451 version.

Okay, I did that twice. Same results, BSOD both times.

While watching these last two installation tries, I took note of the white text in the window that mentions what file is being extracted/installed. When the process reaches 100% the white text lists a number of items being started.

When the white text reads "Finishing Setup" and an icon is placed on my desktop, immediately after, the computer crashes. Whatever comes after the Avast icon placement is causing this issue. It looks like the program installs fine - whatever is in the "finishing" details is causing the havoc.

Can you please send me (kurtin@avast.com) the latest 1-3 minidump files from \Windows\Minidump folder? Thanks.

I tend to interrupt the BSOD as it is counting the dump of memory. Not sure if that matters to the minidump. Each file in the Windows minidump folder is 128K. Sound about right?

I will send those now.

The mini dumps are much smaller than a full memory dump and 128KB sounds about right for each mini dump file.

Good! I hope my input either helps fix something simple in the installation or results in revealing something simple on the user end.
 ;)

Either way, I'm a cheerleader for Avast.

Thanks for trying to improve avast, pk normally gets back to the topic if he finds the cause.

Ah, gentlemen, you have my most sincere apologies for the time spent on this issue.

I downloaded XP Service Pack 2 and Avast installed without a single hitch. No BSOD. So any XP user who is having this BSOD issue should check for Service Pack update. I normally avoid Windows Updates with the assumption "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." But the Service Pack 2 includes stability fixes.

Thank you for your time with this and I hope I at least have offered you a fix-suggestion you can use for other XP-64 customers who get the BSOD in installation.

Ah that would certainly put a crimp in an installation attempt, I'm surprised it got as far as it did.

The SPs aren't a case of if it isn't broke don't fix it, aside from any bug fixes (it is broke) they also include a collation of the security updates (KBs). There are no more windows security updates for XP unless you have SP3.
