[7.0.1451] Mail Shield POP3 SSL issues [RESOLVED]
« on: June 29, 2012, 08:09:49 PM »
EDIT: Issue is resolved in 7.0.1456! Thank you Avast developers and Avast Evangelists! :D

Since updating to 7.0.1451, AVAST Mail Shield's POP3 SSL proxy does NOT work for me. When attempting to retrieve mail in Thunderbird, it spits out this unhelpful message:
"An error occurred with the POP3 mail server. Mail server pop.xs4all.nl responded:" (there's nothing after the ":")

No mail gets downloaded, nothing shows up in AVAST's Mail Shield log.

Note that before this update the unencrypted Thunderbird/encrypted Mail Shield proxy combination always worked fine. I have (re-)verified every mail setting with my ISP (dutch) and nothing has changed. So Thunderbird always used the settings from the last block on that site and AVAST used the settings from the second block. This should be correct, I think, and worked fine before this last update.

I tried a full, clean reinstall of AVAST. That is: normal uninstall, reboot, then reboot in safe mode, run AVAST uninstall utility, reboot, reinstall, reboot. The problem persists.

Note that there are no issues syncing mail with unencrypted POP3 in AVAST's Mail Shield. SMTP SSL works fine too. Same goes for disabling the Mail Shield altogether. Or changing Thunderbird's settings to SSL, so the Mail Shield get's bypassed.

I think there's a bug/problem with POP3 SSL in AVAST's Mail Shield since 7.0.1451. Anyone who has similar problems, ideas or a real solution? And I mean not just "disable/bypass Mail Shield" or "just stop syncing pop using ssl". I don't want to permanently compromise security somewhere, just to work around a bug.

PS: I think this guy has the same problem:

Is the problem only with incoming mail, or is it affecting outgoing as well? What's your POP3 port number, and your SMTP port number, in Thunderbird? Use 110 for POP3, if its not that, and 25 for SMTP, if not that. See if that solves the issue.

The combination SMTP SSL in AVAST and SMTP without SSL in Thunderbird worked fine and still works fine. So no issues with outgoing mail.

It's been setup like that for a long time and always worked perfectly...until this last AVAST program update. See below:

Thunderbird POP3 110, SMTP 25, no encryption whatsoever:

This is the error I get when fetching mail (so incoming only!):

AVAST POP3 995, SMTP 465, both SSL:

I ran into similar problem: no connection to pop ssl server at xs4all.nl possible. I'm using Outlook (2007 SP3). Ougoing mail no problem. When I stop Avast mailshield everything works like it should.

More info:
I've tagged "use SSL connection for this server" in the advance tab of emailsettings in Outlook.
Doing this the portnumber changed by itself to 995.
Everything seems to work as it should now.

This works because it bypasses Mail Shield. So it's the same as stopping the Mail Shield. It's not a real solution, just a workaround that bypasses your Avast anti-virus :-\

Avast basically works as a proxy between your mail server (ISP) and mail client (Outlook, Thunderbird, etc). Avast handles SSL negotiation for you and needs the mail client to be unencrypted in order to work. If you setup SSL inside the mail client, like you've done now, you will get a message in a couple of hours/days from Avast telling you it needs unencrypted settings in the mail client in order to let the Mail Shield function correctly and scan your mail for viruses.

I think it's interesting to hear you have the same ISP. Maybe it has to do with their implementation of SSL?
Are there people with different ISP's that have this problem too or is it just XS4All?

EDIT: read this Avast article to understand how the Mail Shield works and how you're supposed to configure everything:

Looks like you're right. I checked the mailshield history and found no scanned mails since I changed the settings.
If Avast does not react on this I could contact XS4ALL helpdesk but I'm affraid they will say: 'so this happened after the Avast update, well it msut be an Avast problem".

I'm afraid I may have to be a me too with an 'NTLWORLD' account. All 4 of my machines can no longer send SSL emails using NTLWORLD but can using GMX. Seems to have coincided with update :(

I have contacted the Avast Team to see if this is a bug in the 7.0.1451 version.  I heard they were planning a bug fix this week, but I do not have details.  Regardless, I wanted them to be aware of this issue.  Thank you.

Maybe too soon?

Sorry but a new problem is now arising with Outlook 2007 (SP3)
Everytime I start Outlook I get a pop-up screen saying (My Translation from Dutch):
There is a serious problem with Avast Outlook Adin
Check wether there is an update available for this adin
Do you want to remove the Addin Yes or NO?

What should I do?
