I've got a memory leak today in one of my XP systems...

Me too.

I think it is time to admit that the new version was released without proper testing.

Man, you are testing it right now!  ;D

Yeah, all XP users have suddently become beta testers. But opposite to the previous beta testers, it completely screws up our pc's. The official beta testers seems only in rare occations to be affected by this major bug.

As for the memory leak issue, I had tried the RC1 as well,  but indeed only for a couple of days before the official program upgrade came out. So no chances for me to test it thoroughly.

I upgraded to 7.0.1451 on three computers. The one with Windows 7 has been running fine, but the ones with XP SP3 have been experiencing problems.

After awhile my computer slows down to a crawl and then I get an error whenever I try to open something. In the event viewer these are listed as Event 26 and say "Application popup: taskmgr.exe - Application Error : The application failed to initialize properly (0xc000012d). Click on OK to terminate the application" or "Bad Image... is not a valid windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette". Other things also happen like the letters on the Start button disappearing, labels on the top of windows disappearing or turning black, and the shut down screen is changed. After a reboot things go back to normal until the problem happens again (usually in a few hours).

The event viewer will sometimes also show SidebySide errors (Event 59) at the same time these problems are happening. They say different things but for example one says "Resolve partial assembly for Microsoft.Windows.Common.Controls. Reference error message: Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service."

These errors seem to be triggered when copying/moving a lot of files or browsing the internet w/ a few resource intensive tabs.

These problems started happening immediately after getting the new upgrade in Avast.

I have this same issue with Win XP SP3.   Do I upgrade to the latest version 7.0.1456 now? Or downgrade to the 1426? I am completely confused.  I know NOW that a number of items I had saved on my desktop are completely garbled  - I don't even know what they are now.  I had a few documents saved there for easy email attachment but I don't know what is what.

So, can someone tell me what to do?  I REALLY like avast and I don't want to quit using it, but I can't do a thing when it acts up like this! And I am on this thing 24/7 almost.

Why ?

If because of your other post:

I renewed the program. My system AMD1600/768RAM/WindowsXP SP3. After updating there were problems. UAC causes a critical error.

I beg pardon for my bad English.

As has been mentioned XP SP3 doesn't have UAC (User Access Control), that only came with Vista onwards.

Thanks for the quick reply.  Done and rebooted.

Now, any ideas what I can about the garbeldy-gook files? I imagine they are just lost?

Well documents that you saved to your desktop I can't comment on as I don't know why they they would be effected/garbled by avast, but if a file is corrupted it is very hard to do anything about them.

To do anything you would have to know what the initial file type was to have any chance of finding a tool that might be able to even recover some data. I think as you surmise they are effectively gone, unless you had a backup strategy in place to keep copies.

It's related to your TMP-directory being on a different drive than your Avast!-installation :(
Thanks . it's right : AIS on C and TEMP on D

Fixed on 7.0.1456 , I can restore my very old backup

And , no memory problem anymore after 12h test

@SirMatthew

i ran into this lately and this microsoft fixit tool fixed it for me

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/813711

Changes to the size, view, icon or position of a folder are lost

The changes to the size, view, icon or position of a folder are lost on a computer that is running Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7.

For example, you may experience one or more of the following issues:
•Microsoft Windows does not remember the View settings for a folder when you reopen the folder.

Note The View settings include Thumbnails, Tiles, Icons, List, Details, and so on.
•Windows does not remember the size or the position of a folder window when you reopen the folder.
•An incorrect thumbnail image is displayed for a folder.
•The thumbnail image does not appear for a folder.
