Avast install Google Chrome - WITHOUT ANY AUTHORIZATION!!!

I am not usually active in forums, preferring to just get on with my job.

I just switched on my computer and when I can back to it, it was looping on the avast update. Subsequent investigation showed that as I have disabled the Google update services, Google update and hence avast update were sitting on their hands waiting. When cleared Chrome was installed!

Like many others who have posted here I am totally unhappy about any software being installed on my system without a request, and to then change a system setting to make it the default browser is totally unacceptable.

To make matters worse, as far as I can see, the only responses from avast staff (with 1 exception - asking for information) are to tell the users they they have failed to do something. I would have expected some form of comment from avast management by now.

I feel that the whole situation shows that the avast staff and management are arrogant and do not care about their users!

Why do you turn this into a discussion of the pros and cons of Google Chrome and other browsers ?

The problem is Avast has an option that allows you to turn off the installation of Chrome that does not work correctly all the time and for all users - I think we agree on that based on all the reports from different users, including mine a few pages back.

I like Avast. I don't like Chrome.
Avast has an opt-out option. Avast sometimes does not allow me to use this option.

The question  - will the Avast team finally recognize this problem and rectify it ? Discussing the "greatness"of Chrome instead is not a solution for me.

Boy are you totally incorrect in your assumptions.
How much are you paying for the protection that avast! is providing
Oh, it's FREE. WOW.
Do the people who offer this great product to you for free deserve to earn a living
Since you (and I) use the free version, we certainly aren't helping in generating any funds for Avast.
Remember, you have a choice to uncheck the box to install Chrome.
You're the one that makes the final decision not Avast.

Try reading about the subject and you will realize in this particular instance you are not given the opportunity to untick the Chrome box.

"Just letting you know.  I received the automatic upgrade today and after a reboot I did see the dialog box appear with the options to uncheck the installation of Chrome.  Unfortunately the dialog disappeared in about 1 and a half seconds and the upgrade started installing itself automatically.  I did not have enough time to deselect the optional install."

I did NOT have a choice! I switched on the PC, went away and when I came back it had all happened.

I have now set the update setting to Manual Update, which I know is a pain, but I do not want the same thing to happen again!

I did a custom install as usual. without chrome.... That went fine... It was all in the update.

This morning i turned on computer and the popup appeared. (didn't restart after update yesterday). unchecked everything and closed it.
Now i'm back from work.. turned on computer and popup appeared that the update was in final state.I only had to press END.
But i saw chrome was installed again !!!!!

The way around this problem,as suggested in the post before this,is not to update from the UI but to remove the old version and install the new version.
That way you can untick the required boxes at your leisure and continue with the instillation and not have Chrome at the end
That is the way i did it after trying three times to update from the UI.

I lost a huge amount of respect for Avast today with their drive-by install of Google Chrome. I never saw ANYTHING at all about a Chrome install. All I did was restart my computer due to upgrading WinZip to v16.5 and BOOM ... a goddamn thank you from Avast for upgrading and a new Google Chrome icon on my desktop.

I'm just wondering how this actually works...what I must do to make avast install Chrome without asking me.

I updated from 1426 to 1456 from the gui(Update Program button)and till(more than 10 hours later)now I restarted the PC at least 5 times but not a single even attempt from avast to try to download\install chrome.

Avast does not do a drive by install as you call it.
If you had bothered to stop and look at the install screen all you need to do is uncheck the install chrome browser.
Instead of whinging about avast you should learn to take time to view the install options.

I beg to differ ... you are the one who is wrong. And you should take the time to review the OTHER posts in this thread indicating the same damn exact thing happening to MANY users.

I NEVER saw an update screen at all ... there was NO install screen ... nothing ... in any way, shape or form ... I RESTARTED my computer for another reason and there was a THANK YOU from Avast thanking me for upgrading and also a brand new Google Chrome install ... WITHOUT MY GODDAMN PERMISSION.

It's a damn drive-by install AFAIC.

Is THIS how the "avast! Emergency Update" in task schedular is gonna work?
If so, I'll scrap Avast right now.
