P.S.  I don't use Metro.  In fact my login goes directly to the desktop and I did not tweak the system.
Since that isn't the default startup, you had to do some tweaking or, you would default to the metro desktop.

I also don't start with the metro desktop but, I've posted the utility I use to accomplish that.

With Windows XP Pro x32, now that I have updated, whenever I click "update", instead of saying it is up-to-date or doing anything, it just replaces the text on the app update page with an "OK" button, and nothing else.  No indication that it did anything.

Hmm, I just brought the update screen back up.  For "Update engine and virus definitions" it has "Current version: Unknown / Release Date: Unknown".

Looks like that page is hosed.  Is this a known issue?

Here are some images of what I've been seeing.  Before hitting the update buttons, and after.

Please try a repair and reboot.

Repair in what sense? Repair using the Windows installer? Repair using some Avast program?  I don't see any repair option in Avast itself.

Can you supply more info, or a link as to what you mean?  Thanks!

@ Cyberpunk,

I booted in Safe Mode, used aswclear.exe to uninstall, booted in Safe Mode, uninstalled AO Free (no uninstall tool in Free version), booted in Normal Mode, installed .1456 and rebooted. I was curious so I tried Fx and Flash before reinstalling AO Free. There was no problem. Unfortunately, reinstalling AO Free made the problem go back. Perhaps I should replace AO Free with Privatefirewall. OR dump avast. I can live with the Chrome option, but I do not like the other ads, the fact that you have to confirm Free avast several times and the fact that the welcome message appeared even though I left it unchecked. (After rebooting, this "feature" was checked.)
You want to make sure Avast is installed first, then OA second.  Make sure your exclusions are in place in Avast before you install OA.  Remember the 2 reboots for OA and add your exclusions.

As for Chrome installation with Avast, you can do a Custom Install and there are 2 boxes in the lower left corner to untick so you do not have to install Chrome (or anything else you do not want).  Also reboot after you install Avast.

Go back into OA and make sure nothing is blocked in OA from Avast.

Unfortunately with Free version of anything, you do get ads.  You may want to consider OA Premium, which I use and no conflicts with Avast, but Free version shouldn't give you conflicts either.  BTW, the OA uninstaller > Start > OA > drop down or pull-out menu > uninstall OA...or go into Safe Mode and Uninstall this way.

There was a new version of Flash that came out 2 days ago.  Remember to uninstall all previous versions prior to installing the new one(s); Flash has it's own uninstaller tool.  Reboot after uninstall; reboot after each install.

Let us know if you have any questions.

Yes it is web shield problem, no longer hearing anything about resolving. Why is that?

avast! doesn't block the internet. avast! scans the internet to prevent you from getting an infection.
You're firewall blocks internet access. If you don't allow webshield access through your firewall,
then there is a problem but, the problem is with the firewall.

I have Windows XP Firewall, I reset the firewall, but any warning by Web Shield have appeared... I disabled firewall too, but my browser continues without Internet access... Other applications work well, like messenger, avast! update and on-line games...

Hi all,

I did have avast! FREE 7.0.1456 installed, unfortunately I have had to leave avast! due to the major and serious problems I've had with this current program update 7.0.1456.
When I first installed 7.0.1456 it ran smoothly, but a few days later all my problems started.

Avast caused major problems with MS Outlook 2007 and my PC  hanging and freezing,I had to do a lot of FORCED shut downs in the end I was fed up and not happy at all with avast! so uninstalled it and I WILL NOT use it until a new program update.
One major issue is the avast! plugin with MS outlook, even with the plugin disabled my problems were not solved at all.

I have informed avast! of my problems and issues with current program FREE 7.0.1456 and I did as I was requested by avast! with same results, lots of FREEZING, HANGING AND FORCED SHUT DOWNS.

I am happy and glad that 7.0.1456 is running and working smoothly for some, but for others this current program update is causing major problems and issues (my own opinion) but reading posts about 7.0.1456 there are a lot of us with issues and problems with this program update.

Is anyone from avast! available to let us know if there will be a fix released for this current program update or if there will be a NEW PROGRAM UPDATE ANYTIME SOON?
