JPG'S HOW DANGEROUS?
« on: December 29, 2004, 07:08:16 PM »
Hey!

I have a quick question on jpg. attachments, I've heard it said that they never carry viruses (nothing in any type of file that requires opening) yet Avast warns me about potential dangers as well as removes them from my messages.  I am a Yahoo user, and get my email through Outlook Express, because I don't trust Norton.   I have my level set at normal, should I lower it?  I never open any type of zip file or anything I'm not familiar with.  I belong to about 20 different groups and I notice that many times Avast warns me of certain members messages, are they infected in some way that Avast can detect?  Also what is an imap setting and does this have anything to do with these objectional jpg. attachments?

add .jp* as extra extension or simply move the slider to High.
avast! should detect any exploited JPG files...

- A file with the extension .jpg doesn't have to be a true picture file
- And yes, jpg's can be 'naughty' as you can read HERE

Actually, I don't think that avast! heuristics warns about JPEG attachments currently (even though I might be wrong). Are you sure it was a .jpg file? Wasn't it rather a file with two extensions? What exactly did the warning say?

I'm inclined to agree with Igor's suspicions, that if it was caught and deleted while mail was being downloaded (I take it that your email protection is set to silent mode?) then it wasn't really a JPG.
