Is your avast! program set to Program automatic update

Not anymore ... but it was prior to this Google Chrome install issue.

That explains the mystery.
1. The item is unchecked by default you must have made a change without realizing the effects.
2. Auto update updates using the default settings - Installing Google's Chrome browser and changing the default browser to Chrome.
3. It will also make Chrome the default for any links used by avast!

As I have indicated in my previous post, (which I had edited) upon further consideration I have come to the conclusion that I did NOT have the Automatic Update checked.

In any case, even if it WAS checked, it's poor programming on Avast's part to link a Browser install to a Program Update so that people who do have that automatic update option checked will get a browser change when expecting an Engine update only. ... all unbeknownst to them, especially users who leave their computers on 24/7 like I do. If this is in fact what is happening, Avast deserves the heat they are getting for not realizing that this will happen, and take steps to eliminate the possibility or WARN users of the possibility. It's very short-sighted on Avast's part not to foresee this.

You sound fairly intelligent and should know that one should never assume....
As I've already pointed out, the default setting is to ask for a program update. The programming error is the user who changes settings designed to keep them safe
and then blames the company for not reading their minds.
Sorry but we've all made changes to settings and there are times, they should have been left alone.
Most of us have no problem in accepting our own mistakes. I know I've made many and don't think that will change till I'm 6 feet under.

I've also admitted that I have no problems admitting to my mistakes.
You obviously seem to avoid that issue.
Which is fine with me and I'm now finished with this thread.

Thank you Avast for killing 4 hours of my time trying to figure out how to restore my google chrome profile and redownload all of my extensions/themes/apps.

Admittedly Avast ran really well for the 7 months I had it. And I really enjoyed hearing the "Avast Virus Database Has Been Updated" voice. But this was a huge inconvenience and it made me really paranoid. I could have lost a lot of crucial data.

I'm uninstalling because I can no longer trust Avast not to mess up things that are not even related to it.

Your profile information and the rest of the settings are tied to your Google account. How does avast have anything to do with that

If never faced such problem... And I have Google Chrome and avast! in several computers.
Maybe we need to troubleshoot a little more to take any conclusion. Like Bob, I don't think avast! change anything on Chrome profile...
I also can sync Chrome addons in new computers linked to my account

Just got hit with this (the install starting automatically before I had a chance to uncheck the box) when I rebooted today. 

Seems like exactly the sort of problem that wouldn't happen if Avast only defaulted to "opt in" instead of "opt out" on their checkboxes (something they should be doing anyway).

Many of us have already said that, opt-in should be the default as it avoids the problem of bug or omission by a user ending up with something that they didn't want.
