Avast [7.0.1451] AND [7.0.1456] Cause Major Boot Slowdown.
« on: July 06, 2012, 12:55:55 AM »
Ok so, months ago, my computer was perfectly fine. It booted in 35 seconds, and Avast was perfect with it. Never a problem. Suddenly, after Avast program update 7.0.1451, my laptop started delaying boot-up time by extreme timings. From 40 seconds as usual, to some horrendous 110 seconds?!

7.0.1456 didn't fix it though, rather, it made it even SLOWER. Now Event Viewer records some lovely 130,857 milliseconds for boot-time. Just to add, my Windows 7 Home Premium is totally legitimate, and all the programs I have are either Steam games, iTunes, Microsoft Office Student Edition, Fraps, and… ASUS utilities.

It is definitely not any kind of malware, but a problem. If I wanted to use my laptop for something, I'd have to wait +3 minutes? Woah. It was just some 35 seconds when I factory reinstalled it. And I tried checking start-up programs, but I've concluded none of them are faulty for this.

So, I am curious to asking certain things.

1.) If I don't update the program, will I be more vulnerable to viruses?
2.) Is this an Avast bug? Can it be fixed?
3.) Is this an issue with Avast settings? I have them just as when I reinstalled Avast.
4.) What can I do to fix this problem? It's not a hardware issue (I suppose, no warning messages nor BSOD's).

Now, I will disable Avast from start-up programs ONCE, test, then put back as it was. Just to make sure. It's not slow hardware. I'll post my specs. below:

Intel Core i7 2630QM
6GB RAM
5'400 RPM 640GB HDD
Nvidia GT540M (only used for games though).
15.6" 720p Res.
Windows 7 64-Bit Home Premium

Oh, I have news.

If I leave my laptop on the login screen doing nothing for like 10 minutes, when I login it's the usual 3 seconds.

:( That renders my laptop a lazy being like me.

UNBELIEVABLE.

I disabled Avast's process through msconfig, Startup tab, and it took me 38 seconds from BIOS to desktop. I just don't want to dump Avast, but to fix it :(

Eh… it seems when I rebooted, Avast's process wasn't exactly disabled, and the Startup tab shows that my laptop restarted with the process. I rebooted again and it's slow -.-

Try enabling\disabling Settings=>Troubleshooting=>Load avast! service only after loading other system services

Ok true Indian. I will uninstall with the tool and then reinstall.

It's important to mention that with version 7.0.1426 it works flawlessly, and last time I uninstalled through control panel it was all smooth (I understand not everything was perfectly uninstalled though, and the tool does the work better).

Did this work for you?  I have the same prob w/ Win7 64 pro.  Also, I did enable "load Avast! services only after system...." and that had no effect.

Disabling' reputation services' solves the problem  ;) , even if I don't really like this solution.
