aswClear.....Safe Mode problem
« on: July 14, 2012, 03:32:03 PM »
I have removed Avast as I wish to carry out a fresh installation.....I have since seen that I should use aswClear in Safe Mode beforehand, however, I am suddenly unable to get into Safe Mode - all goes well until I am prompted to click on my user name, then a few seconds later F2 set-up and normal boot starts.....never happened before. Any ideas please? Is it okay to use aswClear in Normal Mode?

Generally the use of the aswClear uninstall utility is if there is a problem in uninstalling normally.

You shouldn't wait the idea is to boot your system and before windows starts or any logon prompts you should be pecking away at the F2 key (if that is the one on your laptop) to get into the set-up.

If you have managed to uninstall avast normally (and no errors reported) then it shouldn't be running when you reboot. So at this point you should be able to run it as there shouldn't be any self-defence protection either (the reason for safe mode, avast and self-defence not running).

Thanks for helping and explaining why/when aswClear would need to run in Safe Mode DavidR.

Avast uninstalled normally, no errors reported.

I tapped F8 when I switched on, got into the Windows Advanced Options menu, selected Safe Mode (with arrows/enter), which then showed in all 4 corners, clicked on my user name.....4 seconds later normal boot starts? Tried twice.....

I don't have multiple users on my system, so if I go into safe mode it just has the safe mode options, e.g. safe more, safe mode with networking (ability to connect to the internet), no users I though safe mode was administrator only. So perhaps in selecting a normal user it boots into normal mode.

I don't remember seeing that log-in screen before.

I think that may be it....I need to log-in as the administrator (which I am also).

Thank you very much for promptly assisting me.  :)

Which version of Windows are you using? Under Windows 7, the following can be done:

Start > (type) msconfig.exe > Boot > [check] Safe boot > OK > restart

(To boot in Normal Mode you should uncheck this setting when you boot again.)

Hi Cyberpunk,

Thanks for helping.

XP Home SP3

(I've not yet tried again to access Safe Mode by clicking Administrator)

Re: Start > (type) msconfig.exe > Boot > [check] Safe boot > OK > restart

Where would I type that please.....in Command Prompt?

It should be

Start > Run

So it's in the same field where you would type 'cmd'. But under XP, you should only type: msconfig
