Site Blocking
« on: July 14, 2012, 10:40:53 PM »
I have used avast for a very long time, but until now have not needed to block certain websites. I did what I thought was correct, however, when I checked to see if the site could still be brought up...there is was!  >:( Can someone PLEASE tell me how to block certain websites? Thanks so much!!

Presumably you aren't using the avast Server version ?
This is why it tends to have gone without response as very few use the server version so can't really comment. Curiosity got the better of me, so I took a look presumably you are using avast free/pro/ais (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=2.0) ?

What you haven't done is indicate the website you are trying to block and crucially exactly what you are putting in the site blocking ?

Is this an https that you are trying to block ?

I have found where someone is just typing in porn. I followed the site and put in the actual www. site they are visiting, but it didn't block. They aren't using a URL, just googling the site. I hate to sound silly, but I just don't know much about all of this. Yes, I am using the free avast also. I just want to restrict these sites, I get on here and spend more time cleaning viruses than I do anything. >:(

The avast site blocking isn't really designed to block categories of sites, it has to be a specific website using the full URL. Whilst wildcards * can be used in the URL you still have to have the major content of that (I have inserted spaces to prevent the example link being active) w w w.*porn*.com is such an example.

That won't block all p o r n o g r a p h y sites only those that might have porn in the domain name. This is not an efficient means of blocking, there are many better tools to do that. This is better done at DNS level, using something like OpenDNS, which has blocking by category.

There also hosts file managers that are geared up to block such sites.
