Can avast be run alongside any realtime av
« on: July 16, 2012, 04:20:36 PM »
Are there any av's that dont clash with avast that are realtime? I know its not a good idea because it hogs resources but I have a decent PC.

Real-time (resident) AVs install low level drivers to hook files (prevent them from running) so that they may be scanned to ensure they are clean. These low level drivers can conflict, two dogs fighting over one bone.

So it isn't recommended to have two resident AVs installed, not just because of resource use.

Why does it have to be an AV, I would suggest MBAM Pro anti-malware which can run resident alongside avast! as you will see in many forum members signatures. You could also use the MBAM free version (on-demand only) as a secondary on-demand scan.

I use MalwareBytes Free, and ClamWin AV.  Both are only on-demand scans and cause no conflicts.  The only resident part of ClamWin is a small program that checks for signature updates and downloads them in the background.  Unless you look in the System Tray and see the icon, you wouldn't notice it.  ClamWin installer has additional software option, so be aware if installing and uncheck it if you don't want it.

The newer OS (Vista+) the smaller conflict between 2 AV real-time shields. I wouldn't recommend it if you use XP.

What's different between AV and antimalware app like MBAM? I think their filter drivers work very similar.

pk MBAM is specifically designed to work with antivirus applications and catch anything that might slip by, more so it actually gives first preference to the AV in detecting the problem first but if it gets by then MBAM takes over which i believe is slightly different to having two AV's as they could both be potentually fighting over the same detection.

Neither MBam Free nor ClamWin have a resident component scanning.  Both are only active when manually triggering a scan.  I've had both for a very long time, and have never had a conflict.  By the time I trigger a manual scan, Avast has done it's job.

If you read the first post and title of the thread where talking about realtime so that would be MBAM Pro.

You're right, I overlooked that when the discussion went to MBam Pro. :-[

In fact, we're used to say that MBAM is compatible with any other antivirus, but, after all, pk is correct. It is another resident that *could* live in modern OSs side by side with other antivirus but, as we know, sooner or later we'll see both fighting for the files to scan and detect. Conflicts are on their way imho, MBAM Pro is not an exception. At least, you need to make exclusions...
