Installation problems in Windows 7 64 bit

Have been trying for the past 6 months to download and install Avast free version in Windows 7 without any luck.  Something in Windows is blocking this download so it seems.
Had it, Avast free version on this computer last year while in Houston. It quit working, could not update it or anything.  i completely removed the program, did a sweep of my system and now can't get a download ot install.  No virus or mall ware in computer, shut down fire wall prior to attempting download.  Contacted support, all that clown did was send me a link for downloading, still can't get it done.  Sounds like they don't want me to use their product, should I go to AVG, an egually good program?  Anyone with any ideas?

1.   What is your OS (and SP?), 32 or 64-bit?
2.   What version of Avast did you install?   7.0.1456 is the current version.
3.   What other security software do you currently have or did you have in the past on this machine including:
- Antivirus (AV)
- Firewall (FW)
- Trial versions of AV, FW and other security programs
- Other security software
- If they were in the past, how did you remove them (the vendor's uninstaller's tool or  another way)?

What have you been using for an AV over the past 6 months?

If we are going to help you, I still don't know the following:
