Startup problems, BSODs, critical error shutdowns
« on: August 04, 2012, 04:20:40 AM »
I have been having problems for about 3 weeks now. BSOD's, critical error shutdowns, unable to startup problems.

The startup repair usually fixes startup by restoring back to a time when the computer was properly configured. Then it works fine until I shutdown and then it has to run startup repair again to start, by running another restore.  As long as I just restart it, it works fine.  I also have had BSODs, and critical errors.

So far I have run a chkdsk \r (224 kb in bad sectors), run a memory diagnosis(supposedly fine), updated drivers with a driver updater, run a registry fixer, downloaded "BlueScreen Viewer"(nice program), ran Virus Scan(Avast, Malwarebyte Anti-Malware, Super Anti Spyware), and did allot of research.

Usually the crashes are supposedly due to IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, or memory management or gupdate. The drivers are NTKNLPA.exe, hal.dll(usually one of these two) but others are, Ntfs.sys, aswSP.SYS, nvstor 32.sys,.  It also gave me an error that says PNP_LIST_CORRUPT.

I also tried running an Avast Bootscan and it crashes every time.  Could there be some kind of virus causing this that the scans are not catching.  Can anyone help me with this one.  I am ready to buy a new harddrive.

You leave out the most important piece of information, what avast version of avast are you using 7.0.1456 being the latest ?

The BlueScreenView (not sure that is the same as what you mentioned) from http://www.nirsoft.net/ is generally reasonable at pinpointing the responsible elements (highlighted in red).

Is this the same BSOD IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL when trying to run the boot-time scan ?

I would hold off on the new hard drive as the IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL is generally memory related as you mentioned.

I just updated to version 7.0.1456.   It was shortly thereafter that my computer went to BSOD.  I was wondering if your update could be the cause, because I restored it to a past image(before I installed the update) and it ran fine until I redownloaded the new update again.    But now, I am beginning to think it is a memory problem, because this happens at startup allot and my screen hangs black for a long time.  I hear that is a memory problem symptom.

Anyway, I used your tool to upload the support package.  Please let me know what you think after you look them over.

I appreciate all your help.

That will be up to avast as I'm just an avast user like yourself.

If you have bluescreenview, that can also help pinpoint the various services involved. This is a hand tool as the user doesn't have to have any experience in analysing dump files. http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html

Is there an avast service highlighted in Red in the bluescreenview display, if so what (you could attach a screenshot).

If there are any avast services highlighted then - Upload any minidump or memory.dmp files, zipped to reduce size.  Give the zip file you are uploading a unique name (e.g. forumusername-mem-dump.zip, etc), so they can identify it. It might not be a bad idea to create a text file (readme.txt) with any relevant information, avast topic URL, user name, etc. etc. in the zip file. Not to mention posting the name of the file you uploaded in the topic, this acts as another searchable reference.

- Memory dump locations, Mini Dump files in, C:\Windows\Minidump\ - Full Kernel dump file, C:\windows\memory.dmp

Upload the zip file to the ftp server ftp://ftp.avast.com/incoming

I am using my spare machine as my computer is being worked on by my technition.  Turns out it has a virus.  I can't understand how all my antivirus programs missed this.  I use Avast Internet Security (registered), of course, but I also use Malwarebyte Anti-Malware and Super Anti Spyware (the free versions).

I did have an Alureon-K [rtk] trojan awhile back but the Avast team helped me to fix it.  It was hiding in a 3rd partition.  Maybe there were traces of it left over that were missed.

I thought it was a memory problem because all the symptoms were there, and that's what everyone said it probably was (you included).

Do you think I should find out more about this virus and let Avast know?

Anyway, thank you for everything DavidR.   I really appreciate all your help trying to troubleshoot my problem.

Unfortunately there are some rootkit infections that are doing the rounds that virtually none of the AVs are able to stop, but avast is generally able to prevent from getting much worse until it is removed.

There are some occasions when a poorly constructed malware code that can have a impact on the computer such as crashes/bsods.

I had a run in with one of those work at home scams.  I'm almost willing to bet that's where I picked this up.
I just hope my tech can remove it and fix everything.  He said they could, but it will cost me.

Thanks again!!!

You're welcome.

Sorry it hasn't been more productive, though if you are prepared to go through the drills (MBAM, OTL, aswMBR, etc.) that you did before, presumably in the forums, then perhaps we can crack it again at no cost to you.

Go to this topic http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.0 for information on Logs to assist in cleaning malware. Use the information about getting and using the tools and attach the logs here, not in the LOGS topic.

However, there may be some delay due to differing time zones and availability of the volunteer malware removal specialists.

My box is in the shop at present.  So, I'll see what happens first.  If it cost too much or if they can't fix it, I'm definately interested.

Thanks
