Can someone explain all Avast free shields in details?

I know this question might be submitted a thousand times but I couldn't find the answer anywhere.
Can some one PLEASE do me a favor and explain what all the shields are doing detailed?
Please don't send me in a wild goose chase over the help section of the program, thank you.
