Hi. I have problem with avast. I have 1Gb/s internet so ,when i have launched Avast my connection is 16 maybe 17 Mb/s and i should 24 Mb/s .So i turn off Avast then internet speed grown up to 24Mb/s . So, how i noticed  Avast "eats" a lot of speed. In my case i noticed that avast eat 7-8 Mb/s . How IT say to me "Avast is not a antyvirus for fast link" . Do something with this because i don't want to change my beauty antivirus. Thanks in advance

What is your OS and firewall ?

My broadband account is for up to 40mbps download and 2mbps upload, my connection speed at speedtest.net is generally 38mbps download and 1.7mbps upload, with the webshield enabled.

So I'm getting pretty close to my theoretical maximum. That said today my broadband has been pretty poor, probably maxed out on the Olympics.

Well the XP firewall shouldn't really be getting in the way as it is pretty basic.

Have (or did) you another Anti-Virus installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?

I have just run my test again at speedtest.net as they appear to be the most consistent check I have found, with a selection of servers near your location.

I did a test without the web shield enabled and with it enabled, see images. I suggest that you try those tests and see what you get.

Now you guess which is which.

Wrong, the first image is with the web shield ON and the second with it Stopped, I just did a switch in the order that I made in the post to the order of the images.

I knew that people would thing the slower was with the web shield on, I'm if nothing else a devious swine. The 'Now you guess which is which.' should also have been a subtle hint.

I have seen this on numerous occasions, there is either very little difference or with the web shield enabled I get a fasted recorded speed.

If that's the case you either have a flaky internet connection or the test is flawed. The results should be within a few percent of each other on each run using the same server.

You can do something like I used to do is download a very large file (I used XP SP3 as 360+MB) and you can see how long that takes.

But so far we haven't seen how the OP arrived at his figures.

I get your point. I agree a large file download from a fast server is the best way to test speed.

Looked at a few clips on youtube. The youtube part of my "consumption" is 16,61 MB (download), while Im having fun watching, Avast downloads 904,81MB.
That is not acceptable since I'm on a 16 gb monthly diet.

Why does Avast have to download so much, what does it do with the data, and can I limit Avast from downloading?
(it's the downloading that eats bandwith)

You don't understand how avast works in order to protect your browsing.

When browsing avast redirects your browser/html connection requests through its localhost proxy in order that the content can be scanned. So the avast service avastSvc.exe is the main service that controls the shields and proxy, etc. So this traffic isn't initiated by avast but redirected, so there should be a corresponding drop in your associated browser traffic.

So in this case it would appear that your youtube browsing is only taking up 16.61MB which is very, very low so the actual content for your browser to be able to view the youtube content comes in through the avastSvc.exe proxy.

I have a 10GB limit and I have never once had a notification I'm close to that, I don't even bother to watch my traffic limits.
