I have no idea why it would be necessary, but I have just changed the folder icon for the Avast Software folder in XP Pro SP3.

So are you saying it doesn't allow it or that it reverts back later ?

Windows doesn't except the new icon at all. Trying to manually create a desktop.ini file in that folder also fails.

BTW, my installation folder is 'Program Files\Avast'. I don't know if there's any connection.

Thank you.

I've uncheckd "Settings->TroubleShooting->Enable avast! self-defense module", and this has solved the problem.

(It's possible to recheck it after the change).

I've found it here:

Thanks.

Well the default location is as per my image ...\Avast Software\Avast\... unless you changed it, but that shouldn't make any difference, I didn't disable the avast self defence module co change mine. What I didn't do is create a desktop.ini file in the avast software folder (that would bump into the avast self-defence module).

I just Right Clicked on the avast software folder and selected Properties, Customize and in Folder Icons, Change Icon. Click Browse, Navigate to one of the avast .exe files (I used avastUI.exe) and selected the avast blob (amoeba)  icon, but it doesn't use that in the display but the avast 'a' icon. Job done.no having to create desktop.ini file.

You're welcome.

Weird though I only tried it to see what the problem might have been for you as I have never done this before.
