Avast Installed: New Infection
« on: August 18, 2012, 04:03:44 PM »
I have a small business network and we have Avast EPSS installed on our server and desktops, one of the desktops has been infected with:

WIN32: Malware-gen and WIN32: Trojan-gen Avast indicates it moves the files to the chest, but they just keep re-appearing, I have run a boot time scan several times, but they just keep coming back, how can I clean this PC running windows 7 for good?

What is the file detected please, I would recommend that the PC be isolated for for now

The files seems to be created by the virus, it just seems to create new files on the fly, here is a screen shot from the virus chest.

OK I have it.. That is a sirfef type infection and I should be able to remove it from the system toot sweet

Please attach the logs

First I will need to locate all instances so the first programme will be an analysis run to show me what is where..  Once I have that a fix should be relatively easy to formulate

Download OTL  to your Desktop
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.

  • Select All Users
  • Under the Custom Scan box paste this in
netsvcs
%SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
/md5start
services.*
explorer.exe
winlogon.exe
Userinit.exe
svchost.exe
qmgr.dll
/md5stop
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\BITS /s
CREATERESTOREPOINT

  • Click the Quick Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
    • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
    • Attach both logs

While the scan is running, is there any settings I could change to help reduce the risk of getting this again? Especially on the other PC's in the office? I would like to maximize our protection.

The first priority would be to disable the auto update for flash player as at the moment that is the preferred way of delivery.  If the flash update appears people will click it without  thinking

This fix will do the following :
Remove the malware folder
Reset the windows update registry and service
Check and replace if necessary the services.exe file
And finally confirm that all required security services are running

Warning This fix is only relevant for this system and no other, using on another computer may cause problems

Be advised that when the fix commences it will shut down all running processes and you may lose the desktop and icons, they will return on reboot

Run OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done
  • Open OTL again and click the Quick Scan button. Post the log it produces in your next reply.
THEN

Download and Install Combofix

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

* IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • Accept the disclaimer and allow to update if it asks

  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
  • Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.[/b]
Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.

3.  If after the reboot you get errors about programmes being marked for deletion then reboot, that will cure it.

Please make sure you include the combo fix log in your next reply as well as describe how your computer is running now

FINALLY

run farbar service scanner

Tick "All" options.
Press "Scan".
It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.

Please copy and paste the log to your reply.

I have to remote desktop into this computer, the first part ran ok and I did not see any sign of the virus being on the PC anymore, I ran the combo update it froze on creating the log file and kicked me off RDP, I have someone there checking and he rebooted the PC and all the RDP settings appear to be correct in the control panel even the port in the registry but I still can no longer remote in.

Combofix may have reset the remote connection so it may need resetting from the client end

Combofix reset the firewall to block all apps, including RDC, but we got it fixed, here are all the logs, Combofix log didn't save since it locked up the PC when trying to create the log file.\

looks like everything did work successfully, Thak you very much.

Just windows defender to reset now and a further file to remove...  Once you are happy let me know and I will remove the tools cleanly

Could you run some checks now please and confirm that windows updates and windows defender are both working

If they are and there are no other problems we will go for the cleanup

WIndows Defender is still not working, cannot start the service, says there is a missing component.

Windows Update is working with the exception of the Windows Defender update fails, all other updates worked.
