i did the step by step and when the system rebooted i left the room, when i came back [several hours later] it had finished and booted into windows again, so should i assume that whatever problems were there, got fixed? Is there a log that this processes generates which we can go by? I truly regret not being there and staring at the blue screen for hours to see what it is doing...

by the way - any word about the internet speed on the HP Mini?

What OS was the one we did the disc check on...

Has the speed improved any at all on the mini ?  And is it evident in all browsers

the os with the disk check was windows xp professional SP3. it is the same machine for which this entire post was about up until recently when i added the mini...
i still think that there might be something significantly wrong, because as per the latest exercise that we did with the java upgrades, and unable to see/uninstall certain components of java, i suspect the same underlying problem which we had from the very beginning...

re: HP mini
the speed has not improved at all and it is evident in all browsers, chrome, ie, etc.
I am planning to do a usb bootable unbuntu and check the internet speed that way, I just don't have the time to go through all of it.. I was hoping that maybe you can think of something that might hit the nail right on the head?!

Sorry I am away from my main computer at the moment, however we have tweaked just about everything that can be tweaked at the moment

One option is to do what is called a repair install, this replaces all windows files/registry but leaves personal data untouched
