The mail proxy Avast installs has problems with gmail on  os x 10.6.8, (exerpt from the log):

23.08.2012 20:22:30 proxy[44939] Error connecting to server: Connection refused

This happens in all cases no matter whether eg. the gmail servers have been entered as secure servers or not.

This may be an IPv6 related issue. Try to switch off IPv6 support in the mailshield advanced preferences.

Thank you for the reply...lol...it certainly changed things a bit :)

When I turn IPv6 off  I get the following error: error 1

So I went and did what the msg advised me to do. I turned off ssl in the mail program and left it on in Avast Mailshield (I can even sort of understand why MailShield, as a mail proxy, would want it done this way). But no luck.

Here the error msg from the mail program and the one from MailShield: error 2

Let me know if you want the log entries.
