Add-in is not shown in add-in manager of outlook 2k3 (it's feature of this outlook), but if splash screen appears, add-in is loaded.
Must have been thinking of when I had AVG when it was there for that. Strange how splash is now appearing whereas recently (last couple months maybe) it hadn't. Obviously a non-issue so won't worry. Thanks anyway.

Petr_matrix i am not able to remember the dir that i have installed the Avast, its probably the D: . What if i am not 64 bit outlook? Cant find it
Hope u reply
Thanks

If you are running 32 bit outlook, log file will be called asOutExt32.log.
But even if you have avast installed on another disk, log should be here "C:\ProgramData\AVAST Software\Avast\log" (it is a system dir, you must enable showing of hidden and system dirs in windows)

One more point, i have recently migrated my mail files to this new laptop and have setup up outlook on this laptop. I just copied my inbox.pst and archive.pst form an old machine to this new machine and then just opened these files in outlook and made inbox.pst as my default mail file. My inbox.pst and archive.pst reside on d drive now and i am not using the default path in outlook for mail files. I don't know if that can have any impact on avast add-in procedures. Also, i have removed the default mail file automatically created on first use in outlook since i didn't need it.

I will try this scenario later. It could be a cause of the problem.

This error means, that part responsible for spam scanning is not installed. In free version it is ok :-)

One more thing that just occurred to me, i have office 2007 enterprise installed. The version is 12.0.4518.1014. I do not have any updates for office installed through windows updates. I don't know if there is any update for outlook that relates to add-ins but this could be one of the reasons. Just a guess.

So why don't you update Office ??? It will make it safer and you would know if that took care of the problem. :)

Hi Petr,

Here is another update, i have disabled the outlook add-in by selecting "Yes" in the error messagebox. The add-in appears disabled in outlook trust centre but somehow, avast's mail shield is still scanning emails when i receive them. Does that mean the add-in is still working? This way i don't get any error message while opening outlook.

Hi,
MAilShield and addin are two different "tools".
It means that if you disabled addin, MailShield will still scan your mails.
To disable it - uncheck scanning of inbound and outbound messages in MailShiled tab in avast GUI.

Then what is the add-in meant for? I have the free version and it has got just one add-in called "avast addin" and not another antispam add-in as in the case of paid version.

It is mainly for virus scanning (in AIS for antispam too, but its always called "avast! addin") when you have SSL connection not listed in avast mailshield or you are using exchange account.
