Avast Won't Update
« on: August 29, 2012, 03:11:21 PM »
Hope this is the right board for this question.

I installed Avast free on my netbook in february and it's been great so far but a few days ago i got a pop up from avast saying i need to update, i clicked to update but nothing happens.

I'm on Windows7 and in the action centre it's telling me avast is out of date with a button to update but again it won't update.

I tried updating from Avast's site http://www.avast.com/download-update it started updating but then stopped with an error message

Any idea what the problem might be? do i need to reinstal?

Thanks

What was the error given when you tried to run the update ?

you could try a repair of avast:
XP - Add Remove programs, select 'avast! Anti-Virus,' click the Change/Remove button and select Repair, click next and follow.

Vista, win7 - Control Panel, Programs & Features, uninstall a program, select 'avast! Anti-Virus,' click the Uninstall/Change and select Repair, click next and follow.

You may need to reboot after the repair.

Tried to repair but got

"Setup Fatal Error"

Error reading product data from "C:\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast\setup\".Setup cannot continue.

The fatal error will require a reinstall and the regular uninstall would probably fail also as setup is also used for that.

- Download the latest version of avast, 7.0.1456 http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again (if you didn't save your last download). Use that when you reinstall.

- Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, aswClear.exe find it here and save it to your HDD (it has uninstall tools for 5.x, 6.0.x and 7.0.x).
  • 1. Now uninstall avast! (using add remove programs, if you can't do that, most likely, start from the next step), reboot.
  • 2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility from safe mode, first for 6.x if previously installed and then for 7.0, once complete reboot into normal mode.
  • 3. install the latest version, reboot.

Is there any chance i could get a virus while doing this?

I was told to uninstall COMODO a while ago to update to the new version and ended up infected.

If you do it in the order suggested then no as you will never be going on-line without protection.

Anyone that tells you to first uninstall and then download the replacement is giving you poor advice.

Always get the tools (download the programs you need and save them on your hard disk first), before undertaking the job. This holds true for any job, don't start it until you have all the tools required to complete the job.

Follow the suggestions in this topic, Repair, Clean install, etc.

Probably more important what errors are you getting when you try to update ?
If it is a critical/fatal error then you are essentially looking a a clean reinstall as outlined in Reply #3 above and in the order given.

I have tried this. it doesn't give me the option to repair, but when I select uninstall/change it says 'a setiface error has occurred 536870929, try to reinstall or contact customer support, please.'

As DavidR has already mentioned follow the suggestions already posted in this thread, download and save the latest avast then also download and save the removal tool from here http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility, boot into safemode and run the removal tool for all versions of avast ever installed and when completed reboot back to normal mode and re-install the saved copy of avast.

I have been having ongoing problems with Avast updates...over a couple of years.  It works fine for a while, them updates fail and the only solution seems to be to remove and reinstall the product, which is a pain.

Since this is your first post and we don't know why the problem happened we can't say that the only option for you was a reinstall as there are other options (as mentioned above), but that depends what the error is, a reinstall isn't the only option.

Well that is certainly a step which is likely to have a high probability of success.

However, on the forums we tend to first find out more information on why it didn't work (errors, etc.) and then offer the less onerous option first to resolve the error, with the fall back option to reinstall.
