So is there a way to enable AVAST ONLY when i connect the internet and disable it at computer start up?

Two different connections... LAN and Internet.

You can delay the avast running on the logon. Not only the ashDisp.exe (the icon) but you have to manage the Windows services:
To this, you can try Startup Delayer that controls the windows startup (Windows 98\Me\2k\XP) that does not follow a strict order.

Only when connected to the Internet?
Well, try NetRun. It will run a list of programs only when a internet connection is detected, and close/kill the same 'list' when the connection is lost. When I upgraded my machine to XP, the program that I was using stop working so I was forced to write this program.

  • Tray based & Quiet (no splash or nags)
  • Easy Drag & Drop setup
  • Quicker bootups
  • Internet detect via IP method
  • Supports Windows XP
  • Re-Run on re-connect
  • Small demand on system resources
  • Can set to auto-start with current user
  • FREE for all!

You can download the Beta Version (1.2.1.3). It's stable and functional:

With Avast installed, can you access the router form the troubled machine? (ip router = 192.168.1.1)

Have you tried shutting down the Avast providers one at a time?
Is there anything in the system and/or event log?
Have you set a DNS server in the network connection options?

Are you using the latest firmware for the router?
Does giving the systems a static IP changes anything?
Have you tried resetting the router?

Edit: If you use HijackThis, please use the latest version. (Currently 1.99.0)

Hi,
could you please try to turn the "Network Shield" provider off? (Double click on the (a) icon, select Network Shield and choose terminate. (click Details .. >>>) if the list of providers is not visible.

Thanks.
Lukas.

i am not familiar with the notion of provider in AVAST!  what do you mean by the way?

Resident Protection Providers

- Standard Shield. It checks the applications being run and documents being opened. It will not allow an infected application to start or an infected document to be opened, thus possibly protecting you, the user from activating/spreading a virus
- Outlook/Exchange. It checks incoming and outgoing e-mail messages processed by MS Outlook client (it is part of the MS Office package - it is not the same as the simpler Outlook Express!) or MS Exchange. It will refuse to accept or send a message containing a viral code
- Internet Mail. It checks incoming and outgoing e-mail messages processed by clients other than MS Outlook or Exchange, such as Outlook Express, Eudora etc. Again, it will refuse to accept or send a message containing a viral code
- Instant Messaging. It checks the files downloaded by common communication programs, such as ICQ or MSN Messenger
- P2P Shield. It checks the files downloaded by common P2P (file sharing) programs, such as Kazaa and others
- P2P Shield. It checks the files downloaded by common P2P (file sharing) programs, such as Kazaa and others
- Network Shield It is meant as a protection against known Internet worms/attacks. It analyses all network traffic and scans it for malicious contents. It can be also taken as a lightweight firewall (or more precisely, an IDS (Intrusion Detection System).

Profession Edition includes also:
- Script blocking. It checks scripts contained in the web pages you look at, thus avoiding infection due to potential bugs in your web browser

Next version of avast will have:
- Web Shield provider: It is a proxy that filters the communication of a web browser, looking for viruses. It also makes it possible to block certain files by URL or MIME type. HTTP Scanner should deal with all network traffic such as spywares, adwares, toolbars, BHOs, hijackers and other malicious scripts. It will work as a real time network-based antivirus firewall, it will filter HTTP (web) traffic before it reaches the browser.
The best things in life are free.

to answer all the remaining questions:

- set a static ip @ did not solve the problem

- i have performed a custom installation without "network shield" = same problem

below are the event when the labtop boots with AVAST installed (but i think it's clueless):

AMLI: ACPI BIOS is attempting to write to an illegal IO port address (0x74), which lies in the 0x74 - 0x76 protected address range. This could lead to system instability. Please contact your system vendor for technical assistance.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

then:

Your computer has automatically configured the IP address for the Network Card with network address 000F6672F611.  The IP address being used is 169.254.161.13.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

Are you confident that all traces of NAV were removed prior to installing Avast.
Problems such as yours are typical of incomplete removal of previous a/v.

avast isn't saying your modem isn't working, that is more likely to be the windows dialler process. As you mentioned in another post in the off-topic forum you have recently installed a firewall as well, this is more likely to be the problem.

It is probably best to stick with the off-topic thread and expand on the information.

My dialup keeps on saying that my modem isnt working...

Make sure your browser is not set to "Work Offline" (this option is generally in the File menu). If it doesn't help, try switching the proxy settings from "Auto-detect" to "No proxy" (I'm assuming you're not connecting to the Internet via proxy).

Left click the avast icon > Settings
Update (Basic) > Details > Proxy
