INSTALLATION PROBLEM - KERNEL PAGE FAULT

I have tried to intall Avast but keep getting an invalid page fault in Kernel32 as follows:

I am running win98se and have removed all existing antivirus software. I still use a firewall (outpost) but I have disabled this prior to installation.

Any suggestions as the way forward ?

Were you using Norton Internet Security?
Are you sure you have cleaned the Windows Registry to all traces of NAV and other Symantec products?

I'm afraid this error message doesn't contain much useful information :(
Does it appear twhen the update starts, or at the end, or...?

I had an old version of Norton Antivirus installed but removed all traces (or so I think) from the machine using Nortons manual removla instructions and have checked the registry for Norton/NAV/symantec entiries since.

The error arises during installation when the progress bar has almost reached 100% the file name that seems to be dispalyed just before failure is news409-2d.vpu

I have loaded AVG since this which has worked OK but would prefer to run AVAST!
