Latest VPS update blocks Total Commander 6.50 installation
« on: January 20, 2005, 08:27:20 PM »
Just for Avast developers info:
I've just noticed, that Avast! (4.5.561; VPS ver. 0503-1 on XP Prof SP2) makes immposible (hangs) TC's installation proces. I suspect Avast because when I stopped all its services and resident protection TC installed without any problems. I hope it willl be fixed in one of upcoming VPS updates :)

Yep :) No sign of troubles... With Avast! fully turned on (standard, mail /POP3-SMTP/, p2p and IM protection) running tcmdr650.exe opens an empty dark-blue installer window  and... that's all, perfect silence :) Task manager shows two Installation of Total Commander apps running (on processes tab there are install.exe and tcmdr650.exe) First I tought that it was an initial unpacking problem but manual unpacking and running install.exe gives the same results :( (and the machine is rather powerfull - PIV 3.0 HT@512 DDR RAM)
As I mentioned before - after turning off Avast! - by stopping services and resident protection and killing ashdisp.exe process - TC installed succesfully.
P.S. I almost forgot :) - I'm using Home Edition

I tried and also didn't have any problems with it.
Stopping the services and killing ashDisp is rather a "big" action... would it help just to stop some of the resident providers (such as Standard Shield)?

In your initial post you are telling us that you are using Windowx XP Professional SP2, now you mentioned that you are using Home Edition.

Have you tried downloading Total Commander 6.50 from some other source ? Are you logged in Windows under account with administrator rights ? As I said before, I never had any of those problems with installing other programs while avast! is running. Same thing Igor tried, and nothing... try installing it using some other installation package.

Cheers !

Oh, my bad then, but he should write avast! Home Edition, especially because we are talking about both products...

Sorry Goomish !

Have you tried to completely uninstall Total Commander 6.50 and download it from some other location ? Give it a try... it doesn't have to be, but it could be just bad package you downloaded first time.

Cheers !

I don't know what was the problem on your side (your installation process), but I just got confirmation from 4 other friends, and neither of them had problems installing Total Commander 6.50 with VPS version 0503-1.

Igor anything huge changed in VPS version 0503-2 ? I'm asking because there were no reported problems with this issue, this was the only one, and I also got confirmation from few other systems that there were no problems installing TC 6.50 at all. What was that all about on Goomish's system ?

Cheers !

I don't know about any significant changes... it's really strange.
The Total Commander lockup was repeatable with the previous VPS? How many times did you try?

The "Total Commander 6.50 affair" is solved, but for educational purposes :)  :

...Stopping the services and killing ashDisp is rather a "big" action...
Simply stopping resident providers did not helped - I had to stop (rather gently :)  via services.msc) all Avast ! services. Killing "Blueball" was "just in case" :)
...he should write avast! Home Edition, especially because we are talking about both products...
Yes, You are right, I should be more precise, especially when "reporting bugs". I apologise - it will never happen again :)
Have you tried downloading Total Commander 6.50 from some other source ?
Yes, I tried all links from www.gishler.com download section
Are you logged in Windows under account with administrator rights ?
Yes
...The Total Commander lockup was repeatable with the previous VPS? How many times did you try?
I didn't try to install TC 6.50 with previous VPS because I've noticed and downloaded newest version of TC yesterday (20.01.2005) - just after AVAST! automatically updated VPSto 0503-1.

To sum it up: if it wasn't avast, then I don't know what was that :)
- clean (no virusers and other "guest") and fresh (few days) installation of XPSP2  Prof
-  no unusual and unneeded services and backgruod processes (only Zone Alarm Pro and services needed for running Win XP connected to internet via ADSL0
- previous TC (6.03) instance uninstalled (in fact first backed up to another partition and then uninstalled)
-  installer downloaded several times from diffrent locations (no download manager, just Firefox 1.0). All identical, thesame CRC strings
- no NTFS privileges mess-up - I've checked it carefully :)
- Avast! - except this infelicitous TC and some false alarm with "..\FlyakiteOSX\misc\utilities\DeleteSource.exe" file - but this is  for another topic :) (this time I asked some of my friends :) )seems to work OK
- 0503-2 - my problems dissapeared...
So, what was that -  WFM or "S*it happens" :D

Anyway - this topic may be closed, thanks all for Your help :)
