Avast and Firefox
« on: January 19, 2005, 11:52:02 PM »
I recently installed avast 4 home edition.  No problem with the install.  However, I notice that the blue globe in the system tray does not spin when I'm using Firefox.  It does spin when using IE 6.  Comments welcome.  TXS

If you set standard shield to customise, and choose scan all files created or modified that fixed it for me.  XP Pro /Firefox 1.0

Worked for me, try moving slider to customise and check and also check scan files on open is checked in advanced tab.

Firefox uses an extensionless browser cache, so they won't be checked normally by avast, which is checking files by their file extension. My setup doesn't scan firefox 1.0, but I'm not overly concerned.

The fact that the cached files don't have extensions it would be difficult for them to be used maliciously, any action would have a filename with an extension it is looking to open/run and that filename (and extension combination) doesn't exist.

Check your cache location C:\Documents and Settings\YourUserName\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\default.3tu\Cache and see if you can recognise/identify any files.

@ Davidr ....I don't cache any files ..... it's set to 0 Perhaps that's why it works for me.

Wonder if ipconfig/flushdns might get the ball spinning again?

I have installed avast recently and the blue globe spins just fine with Firefox on. So what arnie95 experienced should not be an Avast/Firefox issue. Something that might be of help is to boot in clean boot mode before installing avast. I did it and it might have been the difference for me. However, I would not recommend uninstalling avast and reinstalling after a clean mode reboot unless no simpler solution can be found..

One more point. I did clear all temporary files before installing avast and do not cache temp internet files either.

What does it show it's scanning? Try opening Standard Shield and monitor opening a new browser page.

Standard shield lists a numerical value for the page without an extension, with cache turned off it loads a fresh page each time.
