Windows Update blocked by Avast
« on: September 05, 2012, 02:12:46 PM »
Hi - I have recently switched to Avast and began to notice that my computer was continually installing Windows Updates at shutdown and startup.  I looked into it and found that Avast appears to be blocking the installation of Windows Updates.  I applied Windows Fixit and Update Troubleshooter without success.  I disabled Avast Shields Control an d the updates were able to install.  It is not normal behaviour for an antivirus to block Windows Updates.  Would a reinstall fix this problem.  This is one of the latest updates that failed to install - Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2706045).  Any thoughts?  Thanks

Hi - I have recently switched to Avast...................
what other security programs do you have installed ?
what firewall ?
what antivirus did you use before avast ?
have you uninstalled it ?
have you run the vendors removal tool to clear any leftover files that may conflict?

I am guessing that I will have to find another AV.  Avast continually blocks Windows Updates.  The only way I can update is to disable Avast, restart, install updates, restart, and then re-enable Avast.  I realise that this is not normal behaviour for an AV, but it is the only way that updates will install.  What else could be interfering with Avast to cause it to operate in his manner?

Since you are using W7 you might want to look at the link below

Using Last Known Good Configuration http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Using-Last-Known-Good-Configuration

You can also look at the Windows Event Log.  There should be an error message created there when the update failed.

You can then post your question including the Windows Event Error Message number here "Microsoft Answers"  http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/

You can also Bing (I don't use Google Search) the error message number along with a brief description of the problem.  For example "Windows fails to update error message xxxxxxxx" for help.
