I checked the firewall settings(XP) and "Avast! AntiVirus"is allowed under the exceptions.

To be sure, right now, can you disable XP Firewall and test?

With firewall off the problem still the same. Cannot update or send/receive email.
Still need to disable scaning for email to function.

Looking at the info you provided us and what you have tried sofar, I would say not Avast is the problem.
It looks like something is preventing Avast to connect. And if Avast can't access the net, ofcourse you also get a error when using the mail.

I suggest you start with removing Spybot and Ad-Aware (just for testing) and see if it makes a difference. Don't forget to reboot after removing and before testing.

Both spywares were removed yesterday and rebooted. I agree with you that it probably is not in Avast program.

I have decided to uninstall 4.5 and do a clean install with nothing running and the firewall off. Will post after this is completed with the results.

Completed the above process and the same problems remain. Can not update and email not working unless scanning disabled. Same error messages for both come up. Guess I'll have to try another program as 4.5 seems hopeless as all the fixes have been attempted with no luck.

Slinger,

It very rarely happens that anyone has to give up, so I was wondering:-

Are you running through a proxy.

Do you have proxy checked in your connection settings.

Are you connecting through a router and/or hardware firewall.

Are you on/connecting through a network.

Are you installing the latest version of Avast (4.5.561)

Are there any other symptoms apart from no e-mail and no Avast updates.

btw: how do you connect to the internet.. dial-up, broadband.

Sorry if I missed anything in you posts, but looking for things to give a clue to the problem.

Can you see if the new 4.5.578 corrects this error for you?
Besides it's a beta, it seems to work smoothly and very stable for me  8)

I concede defeat! Have tried it all with no luck. I am going to try AVG 7.0 and see if I will succeed with it. If nothing else I will head to Office Depot and purchase Norton or McAfee.

Thanks for all the advice and suggestions given as I believe in Forums and this is a good one.  Thanks again.

I thought I would post again with the answer to the error message that I was receiving when trying to send/receive e-mail or update the program.

I gave up on Avast 4 and downloaded and installed AVG7.0. After a few discussions in their Forum with no luck I decided to remove everything not needed in C Program files and documents and settings. Also went into Add & Remove and found Symantec lurking there with 2 programs. These programs were pre-installed along with some other "stuff" that I have never used. Although I had never used Norton as I used AVG6 from the first boot up it never dawned on me that this would cause a problem. Wrong!!! After removing Symantec along with some other things all systems are working. Receiving E-Mail and automatic updates. I'm sure that had I done the same when trying to get Avast to work all would have functioned properly.

Just thought this might be of some help to others.
