More than 161 million users for free... Do you have a doubt?
What's the problem?

Don't know what stores you have seen avast in as they aren't distributed in this way.

Yes it does scan emails, I suggest that you browse the avast User Interface (avastUI) to see what shields it has, it is very comprehensive.

I have been using the avast free versions for eight and a half years in all, just renew the registration each year.
Windows 10 Home 64bit/ Acer Aspire F15/ Intel Core i5 7200U 2.5GHz, 8GB DDR4 memory, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD/ avast! free 24.3.6108 (build 24.3.8975.762) UI 1.0.801/ Firefox, uBlock Origin, uMatrix/ MailWasher Pro/ Avast! Mobile Security

Outside of Avast (Avast Free, Pro, & Internet Security), you will not find a better free nor paid-for anti-virus program.

You can even renew the free version through the AvastUI under the maintenance tab. You will receive notices about 2 weeks before the renewal date.

By the way, this should have been posted in the http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=2.0 instead of the Virus & Worms section.
