Are you using Windows XP?
Can you schedule a boot-time scanning?
Start avast! > Right click the skin > Schedule a boot-time scanning
Select for scanning archives.
Boot.

Access denied means, generally, that the file is in use by another process (program) and cannot be repaired/cleaned/moved/handled by avast!

What file is detected as being infected and what is its location?

You must uninstall Norton completely before using avast in the same computer. They will conflict.
If NAV can't detect it, or uninstall it and install avast, or use Ad-aware, SpyBot and HijackThis to see if you have any (or other) infections...
