Avast is autosandboxing IE
« on: September 25, 2012, 08:33:27 PM »
Hi to everybody!
I haven't opened it for a long time because I am mainly using Firefox, and today when I had opened IE, had noticed that is sandboxed without even asked me. And also I didn't find anything wrong in avast settings. Anybody had noticed this kind of thing?
I am using Win. XP Pro with its latest updates IE also.

Try this: rightclick the IE-icon on your desktop --> there should be a option like never open sandboxed --> leftclick and open IE after that.

My shortcut is in my task bar and it doesn't have any option like that in its contextual menu.
Though, I had created an shortcut on desktop, and this shortcut looks like it is locked with an orange padlock. Very strange. Strange also still haven't that option in context menu. I had tried to find also at the exe file in program files, still nothing.
Thanks

The option in the context menu is called "Always run outside sandbox". Do you have this option?

- Which avast-version? (Free, Pro, Internet Security)
- Which program version (7.0.1466 is the latest)?

Have you updated IE in the last few days? If not, see http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=52252.msg843808#msg843808

Not having this update may have caused Avast to auto-sandbox IE as being otherwise unsecure.

Also, even though you do not use IE often, it should be always completely up-to-date as IE is integral with the OS.

I Have WIN XP registered, and it receives updates all the times. If I remember correctly, it was an update a while ago, but I can't remember which, and for what. Problem is I can't verify anything, because avast with its sandbox is blocking my IE, and it makes it to crash.
Now for the record, I am using free avast Vr. and program version at 7.0.1466.
So what to do???

Even the shortcuts from Start menu for Windows Update and Microsoft Update are no more working.

Open avast GUI --> Additional protection --> AutoSandbox --> Settings --> AutoSandbox mode --> set it to "Ask"

That sounds suspect. Any other suspect behavior on your system?

It is and it was already set like that. I had tried to disable for god the autosandbox function, and them run IE but nothing. The IE is locked in that Sandbox. I had tried also with the shields disabled. Nothing. The same thing: IE is locked in SANDBOX. What is happening?
I don't find any other thing suspect. I had run MBAM also, didn't found anything, but I found in its log that my IE is: 8.0.6001.18702

The IE version is up to date.

Try a repair of avast!:
1. Control Panel -> Add/Remove programs -> avast!
2. Click on 'Repair'.
3. Follow instructions.
4. Reboot.

If this doesn't help, try a clean reinstall:
1. Download avast! Free Antivirus: http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe
2. Follow instructions: http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility
3. Reinstall avast! with the downloaded installer from point 1.
4. Reboot.
