Windows XP File/Folder Names Restriction
« on: January 26, 2005, 07:59:30 PM »
I am using avast 4.5 Home . On my Win XP system I cannot create/name /rename/view files with "Win32"  string in them . Is this due to antivirus protection and if yes how can it be disabled. I have custom software which needs to create Win32 named folder but cannot do it .
Thanks.

jfi.. my Avast/xp system allows me to do this, so perhaps the problem is elsewhere.  :(

I've never heard about such restriction...
I tried to do it and my system admits create/name/rename/view files (.txt, .doc, or even .win32) with the win32 string in them...  ::)
Maybe the problem is the folder (C:\Windows or any other)...

Thanks for reply. So do you know if Xp has some setting where it can restrict those filenames/folder names or did I get some type of virus ?
Thanks

Sorry, I can't think of anything in xp. Obviously quiet a few viruses have win32 in there names, I don't know if this causes a problem with Avast. Is there any more info (non private) that you can add to the types of operations you are trying to perform.

Have you done a boot scan to check for viruses.

Only reasons I can up with that won't allow you to change any file/folder name are:

A] you don't have the correct rights to do so
B] the file/folder has the attribs set to read-only
C] the mbr (and/or disk) is corrupted
D] windows is really messed up
