Why is Avast crashing my computer!!
« on: October 03, 2012, 07:57:27 AM »
Since upgrading to AIS I have had nothing but problems trying to get this program to run.  When I try to install AIS it crashes around the half way point in the quick scan.  After rebooting it will be installed but without my being able to use the Firewall, Safezone or Sandbox features on Firefox or IE.  When I try to use Safezone I get the following message:  This webpage is not available
The webpage at https://program.avast.com/api/?action=2&p_elm=15 might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address.
Error 4 (net::ERR_INVALID_ARGUMENT): Unknown error.

I have paid for 2 years of AIS but at this point for nothing.  I am totally frustrated and would like to be able to use what I have paid for. I would really appreciate it if someone can help me.  I have posted on this before, see http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=101516.0

Thanks!

Maybe your Outpost Firewall is blocking Safezone. Can you check this?

And also what features of Outpost do you have installed - webshield, spyware or just the firewall ?

I disabled Outpost, still the same thing.

Are you sure that the Avast firewall is not installed with OP and is the windows firewall disabled when using OP firewall ?

Have you run vendors removal tools http://singularlabs.com/uninstallers/security-software/ for all previous AV's used in the past to eliminate leftovers ?

I did a custom install and didn't install the Avast firewall.

I finally got AIS installed before it crashed, it did crash though when I tried to go online, after reboot it was working.  I can now use browser protection on Firefox, IE and Chrome, YAY!!  Outpost is the culprit as you suggested and its protection has to be suspended first and when my browser is up and running I merely resume protection so I can live with that.

Now the only issue remaining is Safezone, still get the same message, even when suspending Outpost.  Any suggestions?

Cheers,
Janice

If outpost is giving troubles then as it's the old stand alone version i'd say delet it and use the avast firewall myself.

Someone else will have to chip in for your safezone issue as iv never used it so im not going to venture there :)

Hi,

I can never get passed the Avast Firewall detecting a new network setting.  No matter which option I choose my browsers are blocked from connecting.   Hmm, maybe Outpost is blocking this as well.  I'll try doing what you have suggested.  Thanks!

Cheers,
Janice

I have tried & tried to make this work but cannot so I guess I'll just have to forget the fact that I paid 50 bucks for this program, install the free version again which is still making my computer crash.  I have uninstalled Outpost so what else should I be looking at that would cause Avast to crash upon installing.

Why don't you totally remove Outpost, disable the Windows Firewall, REBOOT and then install AIS ???

Hi,

I have done same many, many, times!!  Same result.  "The odd time it worked but  then stopped working on reboot.  So back to free avast and going to install Outpost Firewall again.  I wish I had never upgraded to AIS but too late now.

Cheers,

HI,

I have downloaded AIS again, and can now get the additional protection that I paid for.  Not sure exactly what unblocked this as I was trying all kinds of different things but it works.

Thanks to all who have responded on this topic, you guys definitely pointed me in the right direction.  This is just such a great forum, love it!! and love my Avast.  Happy now that I paid for the extra protection.

Thanks again!

Cheers,
Janice

You're welcome! Maybe your downloaded installer was corrupt?

Well it may have been although I think it was being blocked by Outpost but I can't be totally sure as I don't know what exactly I did or didn't do to make it work!  I was fooling around with Outpost a few days ago and then today I just thought I'd read up on this again to see what else to try but decided to try it out first and voila, it worked.  I may now add the Avast Firewall and use it instead of Outpost.  I don't want to mess with success quite yet though, lol!

Cheers,
Janice
