I'm having the same problem as everyone else. I've been using Avast Free basically every since it came out, so for years. Have "never" seen this error nor do I believe I need to download a 69MB file to fix it. To me, that's crazy. This is clearly an Avast issue, one I hope they fix very shortly, which I believe they well. Too many over very good "free anti virus" programs out there to have Avast get a bad name over this one.

I'm using the same version, 7.0.1466 and 121003-1 as every one else having the issue. Running on Windows 7, 64 bit, Alienware powerhouse of a PC. I know this issue has nothing to do with my PC, especially seeing everyone else is experiencing the same darn issue. I'll trust in Avast to fix it. If not by tomorrow, I'll be going to AVG, sorry!

@ movieman
Why not, what errors did you get ?

Are you using the beta build (doesn't work on that) ?
What OS and avast version is installed (free/Pro/AIS) ?

Just tried again and it says that it updated 121003-2 to the current 121003-1. Does that make any sense?

I'm using free version with Windows 7

I am really inexperienced with this stuff so am not sure what I am to do with this message. I have read your posts but still not exactly clear what I am to do. Could someone please give a step by step process if it is not too much trouble.  Also does this mean that my computer is not protected at all or just does not have the most recent download for the viruses.? Also as mentioned, if it is "fixed" will an automatic update actually be able to go through.

It wasn't/isn't a malware popup, just a failed update toaster popup in Red, see image.

After all is said and done, I feel a little ashamed of having removed and reinstalled the program instead of waiting a few hours, lol... I had connected to the internet via a public connection (a shopping mall) and was actually thinking I had got a bug... only after reinstalling I went here to check what other users were saying :p
