Always High CPU Usage and crash
« on: October 23, 2012, 02:54:34 PM »
I am using Avast Free AV 7.0.1466.Ever Since its Installation,i notice 100% CPU usage and 98,456K Memory Usage in AvastSvc.exe . Well this happens when a download completes and its totally normal that an antivirus checks downloaded files after download completion...But in my case the CPU Usage
Spikes upto 100% and never gets back to normal . The 100% Usage of AvastSvc.exe continues on forever and my pc crashes . I never had this problem on older versions.

Is this a Bug? IF SO Do i have to revert to an earlier version? :(

When you get this high CPU up to 100% is the avast tray icon actually rotating ?
As even if it did go up to 100%, which I would consider unusual

Have (or did) you another Anti-Virus installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?
Even if this is an earlier version of avast I would suggest a clean reinstall of avast.

Some information on your system would also be helpful, OS, CPU, RAM ?

What other security based software do you have installed, anti-spyware, firewall, etc. ?
Windows 10 Home 64bit/ Acer Aspire F15/ Intel Core i5 7200U 2.5GHz, 8GB DDR4 memory, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD/ avast! free 24.4.6112 (build 24.4.9067.762) UI 1.0.803/ Firefox, uBlock Origin, uMatrix/ MailWasher Pro/ Avast! Mobile Security

Yes the avast tray icon spins endlessly.I only have avast running on my pc now.
Previously i used ESET NOD32,just about a year ago ,had no problems then had to switch to avast as its license expired.

My System Specifications
Intel Core i3-3217U@1.8Ghz
Intel HD Graphics 4000
2GB DDR3 RAM
Windows 7 32 Bit

used only windows firewall and did not try any other antispyware solution

Your system spec is well up to the task, certainly better than many older systems not experiencing this; so there has to be something else in the mix. If the icon is rotating avast is scanning something, avast doesn't initiate these scans; that is down to activity on the system (and you say you only have avast running). This is how an on-access, resident AV works when a file is run/opened/modified, etc. it is first scanned.

You mentioned 'when a download completes' how are these things downloaded ?

Would you confirm that you actually uninstalled NOD32 not just disabled (as that would still have the drivers running) ?

I would also suggest running their own uninstall utility:
Uninstall possible remnants of previously installed AVs see, http://singularlabs.com/uninstallers/security-software/, this has a collection of manufactures removal tools, so that should remove any remnants, registry, etc.

A new program version has just been released, see http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=107531.0;topicseen for info and download locations. I would suggest a clean install of this version after ensuring all remnants of NOD32 are gone.
