Hmm lets check services next

Download and run farbar service scanner

Tick "All" options.
Press "Scan".
It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.

Please copy and paste the log to your reply.

Could you now retry the repair.vbs file and see if you can recover your start menu

The only alternative then is to do it manually

Follow the steps from here ***** ...manually recreate "All Programs" entries, following these steps...

I  have attached the FSS log
also I forgot to mention when I go into my c drive it says "this folder contains files that keep your system working properly you should not modify its contents"  then I need to click on "show contents of this folder"

Your services all look good, what error do you get when you try to update windows

Download and run the activex update from here http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=91237
Then retry windows updates

when I start up ie it starts up fine for a split second then the hour glass will flash rapidly a few times then ie will act like i am starting it up for the very first time asking what i want for defaults and gives me a warning that my security settings put your computer at risk, I have clicked on manually and automatic fix but it always reverts back to some custom setting which is invisible. I also cannot search or put a url address in the ie url box but it always says  "oops cannot find" if I search with the google search box it will take me to what I am looking for. I just tried  windows update installer and it says update agent is already installed, the only way I could get the installer to start working was I had to go into properties of the download file and click on "unblock" that also happened on a few other programs one that I tried earlier today was ESET on line scanner it found 4 threats and deleted them I will past the log. I also try and do custom settings with google chrome as well and it always reverts back like I am starting it for the first time and will never save my settings.

sorry for the pain that this turning out to be
