Problem with ashWebSv.exe
« on: April 10, 2005, 12:23:38 PM »
Hello!

I've noticed a problem with the Avast Web Scanner! Sometimes, my computer hangs and when I look into the taskmanager ashWebSv.exe has 99% processing load. This problem only occurs when I use the Internet Explorer. Then no site is loaded anymore.
I shut down ashWebSv.exe and all is working again!

So what's the matter here?

Thanks

Can you be more detailed.

- What OS are you using? is it up to date?
- What avast! version (see about avast!) are you using? - Try a manual program update to ensure you are using the latest version.
- Where there any error messages? if so what.
- What were you doing at the time
Windows 10 Home 64bit/ Acer Aspire F15/ Intel Core i5 7200U 2.5GHz, 8GB DDR4 memory, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD/ avast! free 24.3.6108 (build 24.3.8975.762) UI 1.0.801/ Firefox, uBlock Origin, uMatrix/ MailWasher Pro/ Avast! Mobile Security

No error Messages.

Not even in the avast! Log Viewer?
Isn't anything reported in file <avast>\Data\log\AshWebSv.log

Hello!

I'm using Windows XP SP2! And yes, it's up-to-date!
Furthermore I'm using Avast 4.6.623°

And there were no error messages! Not even in the Avast Log Viewer! And the file AshWebSv.log doesn't exist!

Now what to do?

Check for the ashWebSv.err file (.log is incorrect file type), the file can be opened with a text editor, notepad, wordpad, etc.

I'm sorry but there aren't any error messages in this file belonging to my problems!
Should I try a reinstallation?

That is certainly worth a try, uninstall, reboot, install, reboot.

Bad news!

The complete reinstallation isn't a solution! The problem still exists!

Sorry to ask you again, but right now, do you have anything usefull into avast logs?
Right click the 'a' blue icon and choose 'avast! Log Viewer'.
Into the reports (<avast>\Data\Reports) do you have anything related to this error?

Do you have any file into \windows\minidump folder ?
Can you send the newest (recent) .mdmp files to vlk@avast.com or rypacek@asw.cz for further analysis?
Better if you can compress (zip) them and add some information about the BSOD and the link for this thread.  ;)

Alternatively, you can upload the file(s) to Alwil anonymous ftp servers:
ftp://ftp.asw.cz/incoming
ftp://www2.asw.cz/incoming

Uilop, Technical is right - the minidump would be helpful. But in this situation when the process is still running just eats CPU no minidump is automatically generated. Please download this tool:
http://www2.asw.cz/~rypacek/userdump.exe

You can then run it from command prompt with the following command line:
userdump ashwebsv.exe

This will create the ashwebsv.dmp file. It would be great if you could upload this file to our ftp and send me an mail about it.

After this, can you please try the latest pre-release update? Instructions are here: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=12320.0. We made some changes in the parsing algorithm, so it behaves a little differently on invalid data - chances are that this is already addressed problem.

Great Lukas...
Can we use userdump.exe for other application besides avast executables?

Yes, you can dump whatever you like  ;D
This userdump.exe tool is an official (redistributable) tool from Microsoft. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/241215. I have just extracted it from the original package so it is more easily downloadable.

Lukas.
