Netscape mail setup - Pop OK/Imap - ?
« on: February 06, 2005, 08:21:20 AM »
Have just installed Avast Home on 98 computer.  Seems to be running OK except - have email log-on issue.

Use Netscape mail.  Have set up POP server which scans OK in & out.  Also use Netscape webmail  imap account which was logging on OK before setting up Avast Home.  Avast changed settings so - (hoping the server is the correct one).

coming up as "username"#imap.mail.netcenter.com - but won't accept my password.

To get Pop server to work had to change # to @ - to accept my username.  (Still goes through Avast  OK).  Can't see where to change account settings for imap server.  Have been trying to set up as new account again - but Netscape web site not letting me at moment.

Have changed .ini file to read "imap" server - as above - imap.mail.netcenter.com

Any help would be appreciated.

(Can log on to Webmail OK through Netscape web site)

- reset avast4.ini to its defaults. (See Technicals signature for the link)
- setup the mail as if Avast isn' t there
- run the mail protection wizzard

Let us know if this solved it.

(Didn't say version Netscape 7.2 on Win 98)

Had already removed protection for Email by using Mail protection wizard.  Once I'd done that both (Pop & Imap) accounts worked OK - without protection.

Have now copied over "default" info for avast.ini file from Technical post - for  [MailScanner] & [Communication] sections.  Checked everything still worked OK  (AV program & email.) - then ran Mail protection wizard again.

Pop works OK.  Not have to change pop server names this time in email prog.  Header shows scan runs OK in & out.

Imap still not work.  -  Mail server password popup runs - showing server setting as "correctname"#imap.mail.netcenter.com.  Type in correct password then get "login failed" alert.  (Username & password work on Netscape web site)

(This is what happened first time with pop server before I manually changed server settings in Email prog. which fixed it.  Originally listed as "username"#server - rather than "username@server"#server.  Pop server this time round looks like "username@server"#server - and did not have to be changed.)

avast.ini file has been changed to read -

DefaultPopServer=imap.mail.netcenter.com
DefaultSmtpServer=mail.internode.on.net
DefaultImapServer=
PopListen=127.0.0.1:110
SmtpListen=127.0.0.1:25
ImapListen=127.0.0.1:143
UseDefaultSmtp=0
AutoSetProtection=0
ShowTrayIcon=1
UseAlternateRtfSyncing=1
Log=1
PassThrough=0
Trust=127.0.0.1
UseWSAAccept=
StartPop=
StartSmtp=1
StartPop=
StartImap=
PopRedirectPort=110
SmtpRedirectPort=25
ImapRedirectPort=143

Correct server names are listed - but the default pop server should really be - mail.internode.on.net (as per smtp).  This doesn't seem to affect pop server or scan performance.

Tried typing in - imap.mail.netcenter.com - into - DefaultImapServer=

but this didn't work either.

Thanks for help.  Any more ideas?

Is the address imap.mail.netcenter.com correct ? I was not able to resolve it to corresponding IP address.

According to my information it must be imap.netcenter.com, but I can't resolve that one either. :-\

Ja, are you sure netscape has a imap service?

When running OK normally - (without protection) - Server setting listed as imap.mail.netcenter.com" with port -143.  This works OK.

I was guessing it might be in way the server name is written when changed by Avast, but haven't yet figured out the correct way.

Not sure whether to change .ini file - or whether to contact Netscape to find out if Server is different.

Thought someone else may have some ideas.
