Before you go have a look inside and make sure that there is a spare slot  ;D

hi,

You seem to have only three PCI slots, so at least one must not be populated (in use or occupied).  In other words, you need an empty slot for this to work.  Otherwise, you may feel  :( when go in to insert it.

HI,

Okay it looks like I have an empty slot on the bottom of my tower.  So now is this going to replace my nic that is already installed with the ethernet connection.  Do I leave the one that is already there and then plug into the new nic.  I'm not exactly certain that this is what you mean when you say an empty slot.

A straight swop would be the best option, out with the old and in with the new  ;D

An empty pci slot looks like the attached below:

See:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:PCI_und_PCIe_Slots.jpg for more information.  Not necessary to read and understand the entire thing before embarking, just select the parts that directly affect you and the actual insertion of the card and where it would go.  Suggest getting an antistatic wrist-band and wearing that/attaching the ground lead to the computer whilst handling the card and motherboard just to be on the safe side.

Okay I think I finally get it, my lightbulb moment, lol.  I have AIS installed without the firewall.  I tried running browser protection on Firefox, Explorer & Chrome to see if it works before I put the firewall back on.  My problems involve these two features.  It worked for 2 days okay and then today I can't connect to the network but my network connection is fine, so I'm thinking this is where the ni card comes in.  If I upgrade the nic then would I be able to run the firewall and browser protection?

Cheers,
Janice

One way to ensure that the new nic card is selected and in use is to disable the Intel card before re-installing/enabling the firewall portion of CIS AIS.  See attached .jpgs below:

This is done by right-clicking the Intel using the drop-down box and selecting 'Properties' in Device Manager in XP.  As I do not use Win 8, it may be called something else.  Follow the bottom drop-down in the bottom of the properties window to disable.  Reboot after doing so.  Advantage of doing it this way is that this process can be repeated to re-enable the driver for Intel should you ever need to do so without going into the BIOS or UEFI in the newest system out there.  As your system is not new, UEFI would not apply.

Hello,

Hi & Happy New Year,

I must have been a very good girl this year because Santa gave me a new laptop for Christmas!  So I have installed AIS on the laptop and the free Avast on my PC and no problems either way so far.  Now I haven't done anything about the nic card other than talking to a techie at my favourite computer store who says that I can get a universal nic card that plugs into a usb port, don't have to worry about slots or go into the tower.  I plan to check it out next week after things go back to normal.  I also updated my NVDIA GeForce 8400 GS driver, would that help out with the nic card?

Cheers,
Janice

Happy New Year to you.

A nic card driver is not related in function to a video card driver (nVidia), but, in most cases, fixes are incorporated in the nvidia driver that removes bugs and enhances system stability and may provide more visual features and capabilities as well.  So, the way the updating would help would mainly be by way of fixing any bugs within nVidia and making your system a bit more stable (one hopes so, anyway).

Hi mchain & Happy New Year to you,

So, since updating my NVIDiA card driver it no longer crashes so you're definitely right about it becoming stable.  Since I am running the free Avast on my PC I don't have the issue with the firewall anymore (AIS installed on my laptop) and working fine.  My only issue now is that when I run adwCleaner on my PC I don't get a report of what it deleted.  When I search for the report its not there.  Not sure what this means but hope it is getting rid of any bad toolbars I may have inadvertently installed.  At this point I haven't done anything about the nic card.

Cheers,
Janice

Well, glad you are getting on ok.

As Win 8 is still new, some hardware drivers still need to be refined to be more compatible with it, so waiting on the nic card is good.  Suggest getting a nic card that states it is compatible with Win 8 and is from a reputable vendor when you get around to it.

Is there an answer for the above or is it working and just not generating a report?

The report should be generated at C:\adwcleaner
